5th gear Gear/Relay Lever problem

Hi all,

I woke up this morning to find my Audi A2 not switching to 5th gear while driving or stationary.

I can do Reverse gear, 1,2,3 an 4th gear but the 5th gear does not go in at all, it feels like the mechanism is stuck somewhere while pushing the gear knob.

I understand the Gear lever/Relay lever has given up or anyone can give a suggestion. The mechanic said to change the who gear selector part from car salvage, but I would prefer we can replace only the worn out part.

Any suggestions, what part should I change for.

Thanks.

Might be best to remove the end cover and see what's going on with 5th gear also make sure the gear oil hasn't had water ingress

I don't want to worry you, but when my Tdi gearbox did something similar - only giving me R, 1 and 2 - it was impossible to move the gear lever or the selector tower into the plane for 3/4 or beyond - it was a replacement gearbox job. From what I understood the speculation was that something had broken in the selector fork group within the box itself.

see part 9A on this diagram :

My whole gear selector part was taken out and #5 ,Ball Sleeve, was replaced as it was broken and would'nt let the Reverse gear input. The whole part was inspected and that was when the mechanic mentioned something about the gear lever selector and applied a lot of lithium grease on it. ... That was 2 years ago.

My gear oil was replaced 18 months ago with brand new genuine Audi gear oil, so there is no reason for gear oil dilution. I will check the end cover.

The design of the drains for the bonnet on A2's can mean that the passenger side drain which goes into a funnel directly above the selector tower can lead to substantial water ingress to the gearbox. It is worth checking that these cups are still in the correct location as they can be disturbed. Obviously this won't help with your current 5th gear issues but may help it to not happen again
