6 Months in on my £1000 66000 mile 1.4 Petrol- The Story So Far!

PART ONE
Hi, this is going to be a long post, so grab that beer and rack another up.
In February 2023, I purchased a Silver 1.4 Petrol A2 blindly on Facebook Marketplace. After seeing a Diesel go for £5500 with a similar mileage after 6 hours on Autotrader (I was 2nd in line) and then subsequently £7200 two weeks later, I continued my search. In between the Diesel sellings, I saw a Silver A2 petrol on Facebook Marketplace, and having viewed a couple from there priced around £1500 but with over 100k miles (one was not good enough to scrap) I called the advertiser once we'd exchanged a message or two. It too was advertised for 6 hours, and I said I will buy it! There was a bit of a pause on the other end of the line, and he said OK. He took £100 deposit there and then and although it was Sunday, he agreed to me going to collect it that Friday, and took it off the market.
I live on the Welsh side of Hereford, and the car was in Norwich. Now the story starts, and I hope I don't offend anyone with my description of people and events.
I am self employed, and took the Friday off and drove myself to Norfolk. 5.5 hours later I arrived at the wrong address- a duplicate of the one given- and called the seller who asked me to me him in a pub carpark.
Up rocked a Transit dropside with 'Tree Surgery and Driveway Tarmaccing' sign written on the side with his mobile number. My heart sank. I shook hands in the carpark, and explained that I would collect it and get it inspected. He began to get angry, and a bit red, but I explained that if it was what was described, I would pay him the balance of £900 and drive it away to the garage I had arranged for it to be inspected at.
I was led to the back of a golf course and I was met with low-lying brick walled areas each with wrought-iron gates surrounding their own 'temporary' home.
Once I had followed the drop-side into one of the compounds, the gates closed behind me. I gulped.
I inspected the A2, the OSS worked -if a little slowly- and although the bodywork was covered in algae and moss, it looked great. The engine was a little tappety, but all looked as to be expected for £1000 and 66000 miles.
The sellers had put a card under the wiper having seen the car sitting in a garden for a while, and the owner agreed to sell. It was collected by trailer and taken to the home of the seller/advertiser and a new battery put in.
I paid the cash, and the sellers son's wife (the seller had one son and three daughters each on the site in their own gated home) began to sort the ownership details online, and the V5 supplied with the A2 was not the up to date one, although clearly it was a genuine one. Having experience of importing my own car and registering cars without V5s before I agreed to continue the sale.
I had called my insurance company and they OK'ed driving this SORNed A2 to VAS Automotive who were but 10mins away.
The A2 drove brilliantly, although the brakes graunched, and the ABS light flashed along with the Engine Light too along with the 'Ships Whistle'. I rocked up at VAS who had agreed to inspect the car, and put it through an MOT. Once it was on the ramp, they phoned me to let me know the progress.
The photos for this part are of the original advert, outside the sellers house and VAS Automotive.

PART TWO
The next Friday, I collected my A2 from VAS Automotive who kindly agreed to wait a bit longer for me to arrive as I was travelling by train from Hereford to Norwich with a Taxi to VAS. Amazingly, it passed the MOT, with a list of advisories visible online if you do an MOT history check.
The work carried out by them was
  • Safety Inspection
  • Cambelt and Waterpump replacement
  • Brake fluid renewal
  • Longlife Service
  • MOT
  • Diagnostic Check
  • TOTAL COST: £967.68
They told me the brake discs and pads were excellent, and the underside looked great. The diagnostics threw up that a Yaw sensor was toast, and the Airbag light should be on, but wasn't. They performed a reset, and it wasn't until I was halfway along the M4 that the ships whistle blew and the ABS light came on again.
After a 15 hour day, I arrived home in one piece with an A2 I was in love with. (Not literally, you understand).
The photos are the original sellers photos.

PART THREE
My wife's jaw dropped just at the same time her eyes rolled. However, she was with me when I saw the TDI sell and when I called this one, so was also quite impressed I'd made it home, and it looked OK.
I started researching, and through asking WOM and VAS found that there were Yaw sensors available. The tyres were really old (2015) and noisy and so set about getting quotes. Audi quoted a total of about £1200 to fix the Yaw sensors (its an early car, so there is a lateral one and longitudinal one) but there were EBay options of used items too. WOM mentioned it was possible to find reconditioned units, so that made the most sense to me. I located one for £69 with a 10 year warranty on EBay from Southampton, and a company in Germany who did the other one with 12months warranty for Euro200. I purchased both, and booked the A2 in with an alloy wheel refurbisher who would powdercoat the wheels (that didn't look too bad anyway) and fit some new tyres (which after much debate on here, was a set of Kumhos). I also contacted AudiCrewe who supplied 4 new OEM centrecaps.
I jetwashed the algae and moss off the car, and removed the Audi ringlet stickers and S-Line badges from the tailgate, doors and service-hatch.
The interior looked clean, and being a hard-touch model, the switches were immaculate. I made a note of the missing items and purchased those from the helpful chaps here.
  • Parcel Shelf £39.00
  • Warning Triangle and First-Aid Kit, Rear View Mirror, Tyre Compressor £47.27
  • G200 Lateral Sensor (refurb) £69.00
  • G202 Yaw Sensor (refurb) £184.46
  • Kumho Tyres (x4) £256.86
  • Wheel Refurb and Powdercoat (x4) £260.00
  • Wheel Centres (OEM) (x4) £184.40
  • Bosch AR70N Wiperblade £7.99
  • Boot Liner £28.00
  • Ombrello Water repellant £23.98
  • Rear View Mirror Mounting (new) £7.95
  • Rear View Mirror Mounting adhesive (£4.99)
  • Sold old centrecaps (£-20.00)
I'll put a Grand Total So Far at the end, if you're still awake or haven't had too many beers.

Photos are of the moss-free crusty tailgate spoiler, old tyres for the dump, and an Ombrello Sticker.

PART FOUR
The awake of you will have logged a rear view mirror. This was because it was 'driving instructor' one suckered to the screen. I began to look through the part-history that came with the car, and all the previous owners names. There was the original owner (Sue from Billericay) who sold to a couple who each owned it (Southend, Essex) who sold it to Peter (also Southend) who sold it to Jay (Norwich) who sold it to Marissa (Norwich) who's mum sold it indirectly to me.
The history was full until Jay. While looking here, I saw a bit about a rear-view camera and mirror installation with- wait! MY CAR!!! A2Jay owned Y664PWC for a month, and in that time (after being on here) installed the camera and mirror and played with a few other items.
Through the magic of social media, I found him on Instagram and messaged him. He was a young lad at the time he owned the A2, and it was 8 years ago. He told me he had carried out the following work:
  • Aligned the OSS and serviced
  • Fitted rear view camera and mirror
  • New Drop links at front
  • New fog lamp (one was cracked and misty)
  • New Front Brake Calipers
  • New Exhaust Manifold
  • New Handbrake Cable
  • New Stereo Headunit (A Concert to replace the Chorus)
He got bored and sold it after a month, having also installed the S-Line badges and the Ringlet stickers to the front doors. He sold it to Marissa with a box of bits, and all the receipts in August 2015. A quick look here will throw up his questions about the persistent Airbag light, trying to install rear door speakers and what a nightmare the wiring was for him.
Photos are of the A2 as A2Jay took.

PART FIVE
Marissa was on Social Media too, and luckily for me was OK with me messaging her.
She was a single mum, and simply purchased the car for her use for about £1300. She unfortunately lost the receipts and the box of bits but ran the car from 2015 (52558 miles) to 2019 (63157 miles) when she parked it up in her Mums garden. I have no idea why, but I presume it was the Yaw sensors and what she would have been quoted to fix them. And there it stayed from sometime in 2019 and 2020 when the MOT expired. It was SORNed and now we are all up to date with when the story started. I didn't want to badger Marissa any more, and so while I have the service book and MOT record, I have word of mouth from A2Jay and her that services were all done on time.

PART SIX
In this time, I had found a saggy headlining, and removed it, booked it in with @timmus and @Kleynie for some work. Once the Yaw sensors arrived, I also booked it in with WOM for a further inspection and work.
WOM carried out the following:
  • Pollen Filter renewal
  • Inspection
  • Rear Spring Seats replacement
  • Airbag light and pre-tensioner work
  • Anti-roll bar fitment
  • Gearbox Oil Change
  • OSS realignment
  • G200 Sensor replacement (the expensive one wasn't requried)
  • COST £679.00
This was due to serious suspension clonking (the plastic anti-roll bar bushes were broken) and the fact that during a service of the OSS by me (very smugly I may add) it broke. The cables clicked a lot and the roof went out of alignment. I was less smug.
It also turns out that the Airbag light was taped over inside the dialpack (!) and while whoever had removed the binnacle had fitted lots of foam (it probably rattled) and rounded a screwhead.
WOM confirmed that Y664PWC was in excellent condition under her skirts and had led a charmed life. Which, as Essex and Norwich are by the sea, is quite a surprise.
Photos- initial clean and wheel refurb results.

PART SEVEN
Still here?
Then I'll begin. I need a beer now.
I polished the headlamps to clear the clouding, and filled, painted and polished the rear spoiler. In Leighton Buzzard, @timmus fitted rear door speakers (I purchased them from CF Autos on Ebay and they weren't all they were cracked up to be with missing tweeters and a cut loom) and carried out the following work:
  • Rear Speaker fitment and new loom
  • 2x USB 'females' for phone and dashcam
  • Drivers side door check-strap
  • Resolder rear door locks
  • Foglamp DRL conversion
  • COST £350
  • Rear speaker cost from EBay £49.00
There I met some great chaps who helped me with the diagnostic lead use and had a great chat.
I had by then stripped out the headliner, rear door panels and trim for installation and cleaning.

PART EIGHT
Next up - @Kleynie who serviced and sorted out the OSS. I drove from Hereford to them, and spent my day at Brooklands circuit while Adam battled with terrible weather to sort out my roof. It now works perfectly and I have reupholstered by headlining myself (2 attempts and it need doing again, ideally). I also VAXed the entire interior while the trim was out. I was quite minging, and I saw where Marissa sat her young one and the ring of ingrained yuk around the rear seat (and the childlock was still on on that side!). I recovered a roll-up roach, some sweet wrappers, a coin or two and lots and lots of dirty water in the VAX.
  • Headliner Fabric and Glue £100
  • OSS refit and service £550
  • 4x standard wheelnuts to replace locking ones which I hate (but have kept) £13.56
  • Bluemusic Bluetooth £36.00
Photos: Working OSS (thankyou!), Installed DIY headlining, fixed cupholder, Bluemusic Handsfree mic mounted behind roof switchpack grille

PART NINE
This is the final one, gentle reader. You may make a coffee, sober up and look alert.
I have cleaned and polised it today with my new DA Polisher I got for my birthday. It still needs some paintwork as Marissa drove the passennger side as an interference fit with the scenery, but all else is good. I love it, it drives superbly, the starter motor still squeals but as I write, there are no other faults. It now has 71000 miles, and returns 49mpg without trying (Fuelio app). The tappets are quiet and I have installed a dipstick in the conventional location (the tube was open and not blanked off).
TOTAL SPEND TO DATE: £5025.86
I have a low-mileage part history but fully explained A2 with service pack, 2 keys (on the supplying dealers fobs) and the original licence plate mounts.
I need to sort out the paint (I've been quoted £650) and reupholster the headliner for it to be better. I will continue to build the service history.
Photos taken today of it all spangly.
Thanks for reading so far!

I admire your determination, but you`ve ended up with a great car for £5000.

My sisters just got her husband to pay £400 a month for the next five years for a brand new Skoda,
Thats £4800 a year and after 5 years they don`t even own the car but are faced with a, `bubble payment.`

I think you`ve done well.

Thanks, I had some VW UP!s before, and while they were newer with 15000miles, they weren't half as nice to drive or characterful.

Nice write up and well rescued.
Looking forward to seeing who from Norwich comments about being from the seaside too 😄

Morning,

Thank you for starting and sharing details within this project thread. No need to apologies for wordy posts as it’s certainly what I drop into here of an evening to be presented with, I do enjoy reading what other folk get upto in their A2s as it gives me the inspiration along with the motivation to try similar or alternative modifications which I might not have first been on the list.

Looking to forward to see how this thread developes.

Kind regards,
