8.5 Kms per litre is insane!!

Hi friends, I recently brought a second hand Audi A2, I really fell in love with it when I saw it the first time. Though it looked good in exterior, giving an impression that it had been taken care of, little that I knew that the 20 years old car will give me only 8.5 litres per litre. From day 1 the dealer had avoided to tell me the figure whenever I asked about the average mileage it gives... Any idea how to fix this? I am very idealistic when it comes to efficient driving, changing gears at proper RPMs, maintaining steady speed, smooth transits between changing geàrs, no sudden take offs etc.. all to respect the environmental crisis as well as responsible driving (initially I wanted to opt for a electric or hybrid one. But we live in a world where to opt for a noble cause "COSTS".)
Anyways in as much I like the light aluminium body frame and the whole idea of Audi A2, I feel so decieved with such a poor fuel performance. It's a pitty.

8.5 kms per litre is (for those of us in England) just under 20 mpg. You should be getting at least twice that. Ideally, you need to find someone who has VCDS who can scan the car for you and tell you what is wrong.

I'm wondering if your exhaust is really badly choked, but that's just a blind guess.

You can get VCDS-Lite as a free download for any Windows computer here:

Buy the correct KKL cable off eBay, such as this:

The free version of VCDS is pretty limited, but works if you take your time with it.

Your car is massively over fueling.

Does the exhaust smell like raw fuel?

Does your engine temp show correctly.

Is it hard to start or does it run badly?

Hi

I too have a 1.4 AUA and would say your consumption is a bit low, allowing 4.4 litres per gallon that equates to about 37mpg (happy to be corrected on my calculation). I’m typically achieving about 10.5 km/l depending on type of journey

Usual stuff to check first, air filter, spark plug condition, tyre pressures etc. I’m sure the many more experienced owners will be able to offer much better advice shortly. The really epic consumption figures are achieved by the diesel A2s

I'm happy to provide that correction. 37 kilometres per gallon would be about right, definitely not miles.

Yes, you are getting about half of what you should. Some fuel consumption figures in the Technical Specifications table towards the end of the page.

A strong possibility in my mind is the thermostat and or temperature sensor is faulty causing the ecu to think the engine is cold and over fuelling

Ah yes, went to see Queen at O2 last night and didn’t get home till 2:00am so a bit fuzzy headed. So my figure is wrong as well . Doh

My petrol a2 was a bit of a gugler until a engine light came on which showed it was a lambda sensor, b1 s2. Since changing have gone from 25mpg to 38mpg

At that consumption you could have a hole in the fuel system or even the tank. Some could even be boiling off in evaporation. Bought it from a dealer so get them to sort it for you or return some cash back to you to compensate. All items quoted above should be checked along with servicing history. NORMALLY a scan highlights the issues but things like leaks and holes in fuel systems are not always if at all detected by a scan.

Our 1.4i AUA, ~270-280,000km in 2018 with terrible service history purchased for around £350 pounds (450€)

To fix high fuel consumption, occasional smoke and chronic misfiring, I had to replace :
Throttle body.
EGR.
Lambda sensor. Exhaust system and recently flexi
Refurbished injectors
New Bosch leads
New Bosch plugs
New Bosch coil
Oil scavenger
Oil cap
Coolant cap
Fuel cap
Engine oil and filter.

Probably the biggest improvements came from the injectors and coil (and replacement of the unmatched spark plugs (!)), although the EGR was failed completely and the TB was very dirty so both of these needed replacement as well.

This is besides complete brakes and suspension replacement to make the car roadworthy.

All of the above I could do myself using the Febi catalogue and A2oc tutorials/advice.
This solved the misfiring and very poor fuel consumption and the car is generally much better than it ever was previously. The fuel consumption has improved to ~35mpg (Fuelly) now - to a point where it is now driving style more than technical deficiencies that can make the biggest difference on fuel - I believe I could achieve 40-43mpg on the same journeys where my Tdis achieve 52-57mpg (commuting). Maybe another step forward would be a good stainless exhaust, but we have other priorities at the moment.
