Anyone lost a Scirocco?

Went to see progress on my headliner recovering. The headliner was propped on top of another and that was propped on top of a car with a dust sheet over most of it. The company has been slow doing my job so I jokingly asked how long they had been doing that car. They said it came in before the pandemic for a small job but they can't contact or trace the owner. No reg plates or vin no. It's LHD. When I asked what is was they said a Scirocco, and it's rare and worth £10K. Google says they were made from 1974 to 1992.

Maybe the owner sadly died of covid and ownership was unknown to relatives. I guess if anyone turns up to claim it they will need to prove ownership somehow. I suggested they put an advert in the local paper saying claim it or they will sell it but then if the car is worth much more than the repair what do with the surplus. Maybe give to charity.

I don't get the details, someone took it in for a job and he disappeared, leaving no name, no reg plate, none working phone number? Also no vin number on any stickers or anywhere on the chassis? In that case were they not suppose to call the council after a certain time, like 1-2 weeks? Kinda sounds like they're tring to claim ownership of the car, they do sell for a lot of money. I'd contact the council and see what they say.

You get the story as it was told to me. They are not claiming ownership and the car has sort of disappeared under the clutter (of which there is plenty!). What's it to do with the council? It's not like it's been abandoned on the highway.

I think they really need to put these situations into their T&Cs but when I put my job in there was only a verbal quote. They are small (8 people) and seem to have a lot of business and were recommended by my local Audi independent. I think the business has grown and they've never got round to formalising things.

Lost/found vehicles has to reported to the council, not to the police.
It's just a bit strange situation for sure.

I don't buy no vin id, okay maybe nothing under the windscreen but there has to something somewhere, stamped into the body to try and create a unremovable record to deter car thieves.

A long shot the garage should put a post on the biggest Scirocco forum for help, being LHD with colour somebody might know something, somebody such as @sciroccorrado.

Wiltshire Council website says the vehicle has to be abandoned in the open air.

Agree strange. As the vehicle has no reg plates it must of been taken on trailer or similar. Did older cars have vins? Did they have chassis nos.? It's probably pointless analysing this to death. Andrew's idea is probably the best.

OK, found this at https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/s...-a-purchase/lost-found-and-uncollected-goods/

The police have a responsibility to uplift abandoned goods and keep them for two months. If no one gets in touch with the police during this time, at the end of two months, they can:
  • return the goods to the finder, for example the trader who reported that they had been abandoned
  • dispose of them at a sale.
If returned by the police to the finder the goods now belong to the finder. If the original owner comes to collect the goods within a year of abandoning them they still have to be returned to the original owner.
The police will no doubt ask what steps the trader took to find the owner, especially for a large item. The website says the trader has a duty of care to look after the goods.
