AUA 1.4. Oil consumption.

My Audi A2 uses oil. At say 400 miles, the Amber engine light comes on. When this occurs, it's just a matter of topping up.

Does anyone else do this?

That's more than it should be. Does the engine smoke during start up? Does the engine overheat? Is the oil clean-ish? Are you sure you fill the oil level correctly and using the proper oil product? Check the oil cap and see if there's any cream looking residue on the inside.
That oil amount has to go somewhere, remove the bottom engine cover and check for any sign of oil leak.

Have a good look for oil leaks externally on the engine especially oil separator and EGR valve. Check the oil filler flexible pipe is not split or disconnected from the lower engine end and the "real" oil cap on the head is not leaking past its O ring.

You are using the correct grade and quality of oil and the car is serviced in accordance with Audi schedule?

Replace the oil separator.
I have a problem with oil separator and oil leaking is clearly visible...
 
I had changed the oil separator last year, it looked like someone made custard inside it. Highly recommended to get a new one, if it hasn't been changed for a while. I think it might contribute to that issue, but if the engine needs like a bottle refilling after 400miles, probably there's a bigger issue as well.
 
Our 1.4 Petrol used to need Oil Topping Up between changes on the correct Longlife 5w 30 Oil. Changed to Millers Trident VW Specific Non Longlife 5w 40. Never needs topping up now. Made the change to reduce Piston Slap noise. It worked for that as well.

A bottle of oil every 400 miles would be NOTICEABLE smoke. Not saying there isn't engine wear ( did ask for the mileage ) but more likely / obvious would be external leaks..


Got me concerned though about "I dropped the sump last years" WHY?????

Exactly from this reason I have also made a switch from Longlife 5W 30 oil to Aral 5W-40. I hope this will solve or at least reduce the oil consumption. I will also replace the oil separator, since I have a leak there instead of replacing only the rubber seals.

That's right, change the whole oil separator not just the seals, by now it's full of gunk and cleaning it completely is not exactly possible, due it's a one-piece design and has small tunnels inside too.

I'm about to do a full oil change and I'm wondering, why did you pick 5w40 instead 5w30? Also why the Millers Trident brand and not a well-known company like Castrol or Helix, etc? Cheers
 
I assume the reason for going up a grade is because the (slightly) less viscous oil cannot get past the piston rings / seals so easily and therefore oil consumption will be reduced. If your engine does not consume much oil, stick with the latest spec 5w/30 (is it 504.00?).

Any oil that meets the spec for VAG engines that is available in the grade in question (I think it's 502.00 for 5w/40 in petrol engines) will be fine. Mannol make very good engine oils (their diesel 507.00 spec oil is VAG approved and identical to the Quantum LL stuff sold by VAG / TPS) and are comparatively cheap on eBay. If that scares you however, then look at Opie oils for other brands (LINK).

Millers are a British company known for making very good quality oils and fuel additives.

Millers is / was far cheaper, on eBay and highly recommended by many. Have a look at the Millers website and maybe contact them for advice. I’ve always found them most helpful. My thoughts were that the 40 Viscosity when hot would reduce Oil consumption, reduce Piston Slap and reduce wear. I don’t know if that is all correct but from the experience with our A2 it works !
