Brief Encounter at The Phirm

The end-of-season meal at Silverstone would be an ideal opportunity. I've met Andy a couple of times when we held it at Fort Dunlop in Birmingham, so this year it would be even easier for him - as it will for you Mac.

Looking forward to it.

Hi,

I hadn't see the Silverstone Socials post, but I have now. Do Socials threads not appear on the front page?
The 19th clashes with something else but I will see if that can be changed. I haven't been to a social since 2019 so its probably about time.

Yes my A2 1.4 was at The Phirm today for MOT, Service and timing belt. My Mk1 TT is having the same treatment tomorrow!
The Phirm have been looking after my cars for 10 years now and I have recommended them to friends.
They have experience with the A2 FSI too as a friend of mine takes his there. His has had the flaps fixed and recently poorly sealing valves sorted (which was causing a misfire). When the head was off he had it ported and now apparently it runs better than it has ever done!

Good Evening Andrew (From Another)

Can I enquire what 'had it ported' means/entails?

Thanks.

Andy

"Porting" means modifying the intake and exhaust passages in the cylinder head to improve gas flow.
Typically production cars have a heads which are cast from metal and only machined on mating and sealing surfaces due to cost. This means that the passages though which the gasses flow can have a rough surface left from the casting process and often have a restrictive shape and size.

"Porting" is a process where by the passages are machined to smooth the sides and often also increase the diameter and alter shape of the passages to make the gasses flow easier. This increases the amount of air and exhaust gasses that can be transferred and so raises the power of the engine.

As the process is tyically done manually, its time consuming and therefore too costly for standard factory production engines.

My TT had it's cam belt etc done there earlier this year. They're a friendly bunch, who seem to be genuinely interested in VAG cars.

The social is linked twice from the right-hand sidebar on the homepage. It's in both the countdown box and the Calendar Events box. I guess your experience may depend on what device you are using? Hope you'll be able to make it, anyway. Like you said, it's been a while :)

My primary device is an Android phone, Chrome browser.
Opens at Home screen.
I then open the left hand menu, then l Diary. OK if you know the date already.
Am I missing something?
Mac.

Mac, is that grey bar at the bottom of your picture a left/right slider? If so, do you see the sidebar with the Countdown and Calendar Events boxes when you slide to the right?

If not, then the forum software must present differently on a non-PC device. Possibly it's optimised for the screen size, and using a tablet would get you the sidebar? Or maybe it would make a difference if you rotate your screen and use it in landscape mode?

No, neither. I'm guessing it's the browser that matters. The Chrome browser app is different (limited) to the full fat Chrome browser on a pc/laptop.
I'm wondering what device is most used by members?
Mac.

I usually use Firefox on Windows, but completely missed calendar widget on the right hand side!

I've signed up for the meal and booked the Premier Inn for the evening.
