Climate Control Not Used For Months Issue

My 2002 A2 Sport has been unused for months, had a new battery last week, been serviced, back on the road but suddenly the climate/air con system is ill..

Symptoms

Turned the on button on, adjust the temp and speed required, no air coming out and then after a few seconds the speed bar reduces to zero, leaving the temperature and mode still showing. With this what sounds like the fan/tubes directors trying to move from behind the dashboard.

Have checked 30amp fuse which is ok.

This happens where or not econ on or auto selected,

Any help appreciated.
 
Fan unit speed indicator running down to zero sounds like it is the main air mover that is faulty judging by what other posts with this symptom have been diagnosed as from my recollection. However I am not an expert and I expect someone with more expertise will be able to give better advice.

Typical symptom of a seized cabin fan acccording to my two experiences.
 
First thing to do is check with a meter or replace with new the climate fuse.

Contortionist time... Drop the cabin filter after placing a black bag on the carpet. Reach in and across from the opening until you can touch the blower motor ( no way you can do this by hand so find a suitable piece of plastic or wood. Making sure the key is out of the ignition gently nudge the fan to rotate it. If it is solid the bearings are too far gone and a new blower is required. Now remove the poking stick and turn on the car and the blower to full speed. If the blower runs you could just leave it as is and refit the cabin filter. However I find the motors can have two issues, seized to some degree bearings or worn brushes. Worn brushes or no rotation you need to replace the blower. If it does spin but sticks then good chance a clean and relubrication of the bearings will bring it back until one of the two failures occurs.


The blower unit needs to be removed from the dash.


I use a cordless drill and spin the wheel in both directions as I am cleaning out the bearings with WD40 as this will flush out any debris after placing the fan inside a bin back to catch the oil and gunk spun out. Keep checking to see if the fan has freed up. Note it only rotates about 45 degrees when free and new. Once happy then get a spray can of silicon lubricant and lightly spray the bearing areas either end of the wheel.

Reconnect it to the cars wiring but do not refit it yet. Turn on the engine and try the fan speeds being careful not to drop it or get anything caught in it as it spins. Now if working normally refit it, if not then replace it.

I have repaired about 8 blower motors and out of those 6 are still working now, one was completely seized and the other the brushes had worn out.
 
Has it stayed this way throughout a journey? Mine occasionally conks out as well at the beginning of a journey, but then gets going again fairly quickly.
 
Could be stuck fresh air flaps in the HVAC? There's a flow sensor, (I think), so if no flow, probably shuts the fan down.
