Hi,
Our areas of expertise and experience all vary. It can be an uphill struggle trying to fix a 20+ year old car.

So what I wanted to know was what is the ECU doing when I turn the key on a 1.4 petrol?

Well simply put recording the inputs from sensors and controllers and giving commands or outputs to the various engine parts that keep the engine running.

But when something goes wrong it can be difficult to know where to start as there are quite a few different parts to firstly identify in the engine and then perform a diagnosis check upon.

The Erwin workshop manual, a VCDS scan and the self study guides are what I use. Plus the massive library of information contained within the A2OC servers.

To help me organise my thoughts and aid diagnosis by keeping a visual record of the work I'd done I used this diagram from The Audi self-study programme 247 page 16 & 17.

I print this page out and annotate it with information such as part numbers, electrical connector pin data, measuring block data from VCDS and build up a picture of the engine management system as a whole.
I hope this can help both new and experienced mechanics alike.
