Fixed - OBD2 Port. Is this normal? - yes. It is.

Trying to plug my odb2 gadget into the ODB2 Port under the dash, and it's not having it.
I don't want to give it too much brute force in case I break it, but it's not going in.
(I have double/treble checked that it's the right way round.)
Is this normal? Am I doing something wrong?

It should fit quite easily, it doesn't "snap" in, or feel positive though. The cable connector should have a red led, which confirms it's in.
I find it best to kneel on the ground, and poke my head in so that I can see it. If you get it lined up, it'll go in, no force needed, but the engagement is not positive, feels like it's not fully in.

Check the plug on your device. I had this happen a few years ago with my VAG401 having got used to inserting the plug sight-unseen from the drivers' seat. It was nearly in place but a bit more effort than usual and when home was unresponsive. The mate I was visiting suggested having a look at the plug and we found that I'd managed to bend a pin. Straightened it out with needle-nose pliers and it was back to full function again.

edit - worth also noting that of the 4 or 5 ODB cables I have there is one where the casing is a fraction larger than the others or maybe needs trimming so it simply doesn't insert as well to begin with ; you have to give it a bit more force and waggling to get it to insert, with concomitant risk that this could result in a misaligned / bent pin. Luckily it's not one I have to use with any regularity so it's not really an issue but something to be aware of.

@q292u

What maybe is hindering connection is the angle you need for alignment, I have always found it odd.

From memory it is not at right angles to the trim face but at an angle, you can see why from rotifer's picture - the socket is tilting back in its recess at an angle.

You are spot on, @Andrew & @PlasticMac : I tried angling it a bit, and it worked!
Moving the seat back helped tremendously, too..
Read the engine DTC, "no codes". Erased codes anyway.
The only code I could find was on ABS. (00532 I think)
I erased everything I could, and bingo, no EML. Not sure at which point that went out, as I was looking at the code reader.
Got an error when trying to read A/T codes, "Link Error".
BTW, the VW code reader cost me £10 on FB marketplace a couple of years back.

As usual, thanks for all the help and advice guys, it really makes a difference

I'm, an old hand at this game now. Got an intermittent O2 sensor error (got a replacement, just haven't fitted it yet), so I've reset it a few times now.

When I did this for the first time the other day I struggled, I was quite convinced I hadn't connected it and was really surprised when it worked. But once I realised it doesn't snap into place nicely it was fine - after crawling under the steering wheel the first couple of times I learned to do it by braille from the seat
