GDW towbar fitting

Hi All
I have had a look through the old posts on towbar fitting but can find no reference
to cutting the holes in the chassis for a GDW towbar as you do with an original Audi
bar which I fitted some years ago.
So my question is does the GDW bar need the holes and top hats

I fitted a non OE towbar. I need to check but I think it's a GDW. It has top hats and I got a copy of fitting instructions. Showing where to cut . I can send if it's helpful . Does your towbar have top hats with it ?

Depronman does top hats I think if you don't have them

Brilliant, thanks for that mate
I haven’t got a towbar yet, still looking for a used one
but will probably have to buy a GDW

Do you or anyone else think the top hats are necessary
only asking as when I fitted my last one the six bolts seemed to holding everything fine

Ok this is an engineering guess ! You could if you wish work it out but I haven't so it's just a comment. You've got six bolts in tension which will take all the load when towing . This applies when pulling the load when braking the load is applied to the surface of the rear panel . This is without the top hats . The top hats are sat into the frame rails so will transfer some of the load into frame . Also the rivets will have the same result. I personally use my towbar to allow me to tow variable weight trailers and fit a Bakrak ( cool item if you havent seen one ) I wouldnt want to do that with parts of the towbar fitting kit missing .

I'm going to say I think they are necessary.

I've also made myself a piggyback wiring loom . Don't know if Timmus makes one but I thought I would have a go. So no chocblocs or connectors and no cut wires . Used the loom with a quality relay and it works faultlessly.

you can get a correct loom still; I think I paid €100 for mine a couple of years back. I would not go without the top hats, though I know there are some 'bars installed without them.
