Headlight Switch - Modified

Hello. New to me owner of a 1.4 TDI. Have the usual worn light switch and saw this on ebay.

For the price I was intrigued and bought it for £26.

I assume its an already modified switch with auto lights - however looks like the sensor is missing.

Maybe came from a members car? The sellers other items are breaking from a UK 2001 light blue A2, however the breaker seems to be located in Lithuania.

I assume it should just work - plug and play - just without an auto function? Until I get a sensor.
Also wonder if it will have the fog light dash indicator MOT fail issue I saw mentioned? I can keep my old unit handy if it does cause issues.

ah ok thanks, I probably should have checked the connectors first!

The housing certainly looks like its from the A2? Wonder how they got it fit the A2 loom?

Standard appearance VAG switch on the front side hence the visual similarity of the housing (but the A2 one locates in a unique moulding) ; but you need the chunky rectangular connector on the back (I think it is referred to as the Golf IV connector ?) for the A2 on the reverse side. This one doesn't.

These come in sensor and non-sensor versions - retrofitting a sensor is probably a level of complication well beyond cost-effectiveness.

Secondly, be aware that these non-original parts (admittedly much cheaper than original) are much more likely to fail and leave you without headlights at an inopportune moment. I have experience of this, and it is worth listening to Tom Cunningham's views on these (@timmus) as our resident A2oc electrical expert.

@Rofomojo I and others have added an LED to the light switch https://www.a2oc.net/community/inde...auto-headlight-switch-pass-the-new-mot.39378/ I think the bluetooth versions are the best choice now.

Yes, it's a MOT failure, not that the led light really helps. It is so far down/obscured by the steering wheel that I've not noticed it was on more than once.

i think it depends on how lucky you are with your friendly tester.
my aftermarket switch without the led on the rear fog wasn't picked up (thankfully)
others haven't been so lucky
