Hello from Devon UK

Hi there
I'm new to the forum .... my old has been returned to me a2 x reg 2001 petrol 1.4 with 97k on the clock and a pretty full service history
My mother in law had it for years and its now come back to me with multiple small issues she cant be bothered to get fixed
I really like these cars though so looking fwd to getting it back in decent shape again!
1st on the list include:

I have a parasitic load on the battery that flattens it in a week
The boot release button on the tailgate doesnt work, nor the button on the key to do the same job (someone has wired the boot release into the petrol cap release to at least have some way of opening the boot!)
The front lights are full of moisture
the drivers side electric window is making a noise but not operating the window. crunching noises but at least the switch /relay is working so hoping it has just unseated something?
Oh and the drivers seat is completely soaking wet - as the window jamed in open and mother in law left it in the tipping rain for weeks like that :)
drives nice though and has a new clutch so feels like a good car that needs some basics sorted!

All the best
M

Sounds like a relatively easy recommission.

The drovers window will be the regulator and will need the frame changing. I can supply one for £30 plus £9.60 postage.

The boot lock may well be the boot solenoid, but it needs further investigation before throwing parts at the car.

Hi there Steve
Thanks for the helpful reply
The window motor is turning well

I've just had the door apart and the cables that drive the window up and down snapped !

Do you know if I can just replace these ?
The white plastic mechanism that sits behind the motor and onto which the wires rotate seems ok
Happy to do the whole frame if that's easier !

Also ....
as per phot looks like the hinge was riveted ?? Onto the door but that's come loose ...

And ... whilst I'm in this zone of the car ...

Any idea how I remove this trim section that holds the petrol cap release (and mystery .... alarm??) button ?

My mother in laws mechanic wired the petrol cap release button to work the boot release (it works when the doors wiring aren't out!) So the solenoids working and must just be the boot button I'm guessing ... do you have any please?

All the very best

Many have tried just replacing the regulator but its far far easier to change the complete window frame, only 4 torx bolts from where you are now.

The b pillar cover simply pulls off from the top.

I'd have to check for a boot button for you, I may have one there. The annoying thing is you have to remove the boot trim panel (outside one) to replace it.

If it's just the boot release button, no need to remove any trim,

Mac.
thanks so much - i saw your great post earlier actually and I'll definately have a go.
sadly a mechanic has rewired the boot release mechanism to be triggered by another switch inside the car (he connected it to the petrol cap release button!) So I'll fix the boot button but will have to try and work out how to switch the electrics back to it rather than the petrol cap button.
I'll have a look under the trim on the petrol cap button area... not sure how to remove that yet..... its on the pillar on the drivers side door. Fingers crossed it'll not be too hard

just to say i managed to re rivet the door hinge back in place
sadly the door clunks lots so i think a plastic part of the door hinge has bitten the dust.
Lovely engineering on these cars... almost a pleasure to take apart ... sooo much nicer than most other old cars i've had the misfortune to mess about with. Quality gear imo :)

The petrol cap button will lever (gently) out from the front, no need to remove trim, if that is enough for your purposes. I think the trim pulls off from the top if you need more access. Sneaking admiration for this mechanic's bodge.

Welcome by the way.

it'll be a worn or knackered check strap (the piece that had disintegrated at the rivets). Contact Paul @depronman . You unbolt the foot from the door by the speaker, and detach the pin at the door-frame end, and replace the whole component with one that Paul has re-engineered with new rollers and the rivets replaced with a more durable solution. Returns to smooth closing action. If you don't it makes a horrid noise and eventually damages the speaker as well.
