As the suns out i decided I'd do some jobs on my 2001 1.4TDI
As I was replacing the dog mount as one of these jobs I thought it would be a good idea to change the gearbox oil too. With the mount removed I can clearly see the gearbox drain plug (large hex socket on bottom of gearbox housing) and was expecting a similar plug on one side or the other but as much as I seach I cant see it lol.

There a tutorial with pics in the forum but the plugs look different on that gearbox, can someone give me a hint lol.

I'm doing a normal oil service in the meantime and changing the drops

Cheers Dave

From memory when mine (Tdi) was topped up, in the end he used a funnel into a piece of tubing going in through the reverse-light switch port. As you've found, the drain is on the bottom concealed behind the dog-bone endplate.

@Robin_Cox ingenious solution is easier than using the front mounted gearbox filler plug.

not my solution by a long way - I think other people have mentioned it here well before me, and my mechanic did so independently! All I did was regurgitate it..

Of course you'd have to know the capacity from empty as the filler plug is also the level

I've drained mine several times since in my possession. My "she wee" funnel was missing when I bought it and water had drained into the gear box, 2nd to 3rd change was terrible.
I used Westway MT-90, reputabley good for flushing for the first 3 fill ups, they got progressively better. The first one came out like thin chocolate sauce.
Filling was easy with a long hose taped to the spout of a 1lt jug.

The recommendation is to use the specific Audi gearbox oil. Not saying others are not as good just the is the recommendation.

Thanks, it's actually Westway oil I've got to do it too. I always use their lubricants. I also buy their 507 oil in 20l containers to service the A6, Golf and Polo in our household. Good to support local suppliers if possible 👍
