I know it's been talked about before - especially after Yoyoman's incident (Page 5 - European Owners Gallery). Anyway, I took my car through a petrol station car wash this morning. When the washing rollers got to the back of the car, the roller went down below the spoiler and then up and I could fell the back of the car being lifted.

Needless to say, I started to panic and drove the car forward an inch or so! When it finished the rear of the car, I was very relieved but unfortunately it did it a second time...no damage but I don't think I can go through it again...hand wash only from no on!

Sounds like a lucky escape this time. You would think these auto washes have some sort of auto back-off if the brush meets resistance.

As you say-back to the old tried and tested bucket and sponge!.

I Find a Karcher home pressure wash complements the bucket and sponge very nicely.

I have never been near a car wash for some 20 years now, not since I saw the man in his nice Jaguar have the brush come up the back and it caught the button for opening the boot lid, boot lid comes up and brush winds itself under the lip of the lid - result clean boot inside and out but with a boot lid that wouldn't shut - oops:(

Besides which washing and cleaning cars is theraputic and I am looking forward to the A2 it looks nice to clean and November isn't that far away - is it[8D]

carwashes i dont use them. i sell a product called silver seal. it seals the inside and outside of the car for three years, so all u have to do is wash the car twice a month with a neutral shampoo and thats it.
no polishing for three years!!!
when u bought your car u might have been offered "supaguard" of "diamondbrite" FOR A PRICE OF £250+ this is the standard retail price, but if u buy silver seal of me and i give u some training of about five minutes u can buy it at the trade price
£35 + vat. just think if u not polishing your car on sunday u could spend more time at tescos!!!!!!!!!!

Dennis is right. Zen, plus it is good exercise which helps keeps you fit, helps stop you gaining weight, reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes, keeps down your cholesterol, etc etc. So therapeutic that A2's should be available on prescription from your doctor.

My A2 has never had a hand wash. I have only used car washes for it in 18000 miles. This news makes me disapointed. 1st it means I will now have to hand wash which I know will be good for me but I would have thought the car would be designed to withstand a carwash as they are very common.

My local car wash (which I never use) is modern and full of gizmos and is capable of ripping off any rear appendage. Spoiler, roof spoiler, roof spoiler with brake light etc etc. All makes. They now post a prohibition notice.

I have never washed any car by hand and don't intend to. I've used two different carwashs with my A2 and didn't experience any problems. But I'll try to avoid using other carwashs and will stick to the ones from which I already know that they don't rip anything off.

No problem for my car. I have washed it 6-7 times. No Problem. In Denmark the weather is so bad (and now cold!) that it is imposible to hand wash the car. Besides, I don't have the access to the handwash equitment, where I live right now.

Extract from l'Argus (french) website reporting on the A2 FSI:

"Pas plus lourde que la version diesel, l'Audi A2 FSI se distingue par son spoiler arrière plus grand et renforcé pour résister aux rouleaux des postes de lavage, des ressorts et amortisseurs tarés plus fermes, des freins arrière à disques remplaçant avantageusement les tambours, et un réservoir de 42 litres au lieu de 34."

Translates in part to "...the Audi A2 can be distinguished by its larger spoiler, reinforced to resist the brushes of car washes..."
