Damning it with faint praise if you ask me, putting it up against Chevrolet Sparks and their ilk...

You would think that the author would do just a little Research before putting this article to print? "Unbolt the bonnet"? "Frugally achieve up to 80 mpg"? Really? I've seen these errors before .... like you need a tool-kit to remove the bonnet! However, yet another mention of our remarkable cars!

Up to 80mpg is achievable. My best tank on fully is 85 and I average 75 (UK units, not so impressive with us gallons). Have not been on fuelly for a year but one day I'll get organized again. I suspect I may have the best mpg for a 90 and would like to improve further

Wow, can’t believe you get that from a 90! I average a pretty steady 53ish, trying to drive with an eye on economy, which seems to be not dissimilar to the figures I’ve seen for some other 90s, and I know that it’s not because the car’s in a bad state because it’s the same as my dad averaged with it in the first few years of its life.

Would love to know the exact spec of your engine and drivetrain and also exactly how and at what speeds you’re driving it. Seems we could all learn something from you - please dig deep and lay it all out for us!

im due to get mine serviced and coolant temp sensors changed and after many decent speed runs to work 60 mile round trip about 85 mph average its still doing about 50 mpg

What you're saying is astonishing! I drive very carefully and I've got the 6-speed conversion. It's the 75 Kw diesel. too. I'd struggle to achieve 55 mpg. I just can't think how you can be getting those figures? It's unbelievable .....

Morning,

Being able to achieve 85mpg with a TDI90 is quite something. This would mean you was driving very frugally for some 800 miles from you 42l fuel tank.

Also you stated normal average of 75mpg over a full tank is just as impressive as this mean that you able to offer get some 700 miles from a full tank.

Personally I have a TDI75 (AMF) and the best recorded mpg I could squeeze out 75mpg with its smaller fuel tank. This was before the MYP gearbox conversion. I’m looking forward to seeing what can be achieved when I next do the weekly commute from Leicester to Moray, no dates in the diary just yet.

To somehow be able to match your 85mpg can I ask what wheel size and tyre size you have fitted. I currently have Pepperpots with Dunlop BluResponse (185/60/15) fitted. I’d not be able to save any weight elsewhere as I had OSS and retrofitted a few things which have added to the weight.

Kind regards,

Tom

Same here, currently doing 52mpg on my Conti winter tyres. When I was using the car for my daily commute, I managed 56mpg. I also have a better fuel consumption when driving in Belgium as the speed on roads (except motorways) is limited to 70km/h - occasionally 90km/h. I really get crazy mpg then :)

Prior to the pandemic, my A2 was averaging 74mpg. Sat on the motorway, I get 80ish-mpg over a long distance without trying.
Of course, now that I only move around within a few miles of home, my car’s efficiency has fallen somewhat. Over the last year, I’ve averaged 61mpg. Given that so many journeys are short, and start with a cold engine, I’m quite happy with that.

Cheers,

Tom

I tend to get about 55 average at the moment with nothing but short journeys but when it was mostly 60mph motorways and no stop start I was averaging mid 60s in my TDI75.

I’ve seen 78mpg before on a long slow trip down south over about 200miles but that was very unusual (and quite warm weather with the windows open so no heater or air con).

I tend to run my car too heavy for good mileage. A full size spare and enough tools that I recently rescued a friend who had misfueled with only the addition of a 5L fuel canister.

I used to average around 75+mpg before my regular commute became much shorter. Now about 65mpg. Mostly A roads. I did once get over 84mpg when I aimed to get the best I could on a long journey home. Would have been higher had I not got caught up in roadworks.

I have a standard AMF on SE wheels. I do nothing more than look furthur ahead and anticipate more.

I would need to look at my records for 85mpg.My best single trip was about 94mpg from Essex round the M25 to Surrey. I had to do my best to get home with no wallet. I have the myp gearbox, standard 90 other than a map, slightly lower than sport suspension and 175/60/15tyres. For this trip I did coast down slopes and keep speed 50-60 also follow lorries as close as not feeling I'm a nuisance or danger and take wind speed and direction into account. (I used to road race so understand wind resistance). I feel could do slot more aerodynamics wise, but all standard at the moment. The 50mph smart motorway roadworks has been very useful for the counties emissions!
Away from the motorway when slowing down its a mix of coasting or in gear down to1100rpm in gear cuts fuel supply. Turn off engine at lights. I do not start the engine just to move 10 yards; I may push 10 yards at the pumps or to adjust my parking. I do not use Aircon unless I need it, or heating until the engine is warm. I make few short trips.
With mpg its lots of little things. I still enjoy the odd blast and pre virus each tank would include a trip into the outskirts of the city zone, but not morning rush hours.
Hope this helps

Good post and just shows driving can still be interesting whatever the speed limit and traffic load is. :)
