Indi’s dad

A2OC Donor
Hello,

Thought it was about time to open my own account instead of piggybacking off Indi's :) I think my severe spannering days are passed, but having seen what Indi has been up to over the last 3 years I have been a little bit sucked in to the whole wow, no rust (well not much) thing. That and the design and execution of the original intent -oh, and how small and manageable all the parts are...
Our current (first/only) TDI project is a 2001 registration with pretty good bodywork, 130k, a dodgy gearbox, and suspension that could do with a big hug. We got it in September, it has only had two previous owners and seems to have been outside of the A2OC.
There is no bigger plan, just going to see what needs doing, see if we can do it, and see where it takes us.

Hi Indi's Dad :)

Indi is on his way to me tomorrow morning to pick up a load of bits for your cars.

I have a EWQ TDI gearbox sat on the floor here that I could do for a very good price (say £40). The gear selector was slightly stiff (but still working fine) and when tested there was NO crunch on the synchro into third.

Hi Steve, that was quick!
Seems like a long while ago that we called in to try Indi's A2 :)

I haven't done my gearbox homework yet, but sounds great, yes please if it will fit in with everything else. He has already taken the rear seats out. Do you recall what the milage on it is?

Is there a benefit to fitting one of the later TDI boxes?
We were wondering about something with a longer 5th gear, but haven't dived in to part numbers/suitability/availability etc.
We are not sure what is up with the current box, it feels like it is too tight... something is causing more load than it should. Not right.
Selector tower bearing is shot and it was full chocolate milkshake (car had been unused since 2020) but it does change without crunching, cables seem ok as far as we can tell.

I presume a new clutch assy at the same time as the box change? Is there anything else that it makes sense to look at whilst we are there (second hand parts wise)?

Thanks,
Blue (Indi's Dad)

Welcome aboard :)

You will need the gearbox from an early TDI rather than a later one, as the later ones (code GPK I think) didn't have the speedo drive output - the later cars take it from the ABS instead of the 'box. The box that Steve has available will be your best bet.

Thanks 👍
We'll keep it simple :)

Fitting a JDD gearbox out of a polo bluemotion is a relatively cheap upgrade as they can be bought for around £150.

It sounds as though your box just needs new shift tower bearings rather than a whole box. The failure with the TDI box is a crunch when going from second to third. If yours is fine in that respect then don't make more work than you need :)

Shift tower bearing kits are still available from Audi and aren't that expensive.

It had water and brown mud/ sludge in it when I changed the gearbox oil, and makes a grinding whining noise even with the new oil and has a lot of resistance when in gear, feels like quite extreme engine breaking, slows down on inclines where my petrol would speed up. The shift tower is also shot but we thought that would explain the stiff gearstick but not the symptoms when in gear.
Is the jdd gearbox the one with the longer 5th gear or is it the 6 speed one?

@Indi
Not sure, books like:
MZN box is longer in 3rd, 4th & 5th.
JDD is longer throughout. Maybe not ideal for the hills (?)

Got this to read through this evening:
but looks like may be worth sticking with the EWQ unless we re-map, and I'm not too bothered about that.

Worth checking the bonnet water egress rubbers are aligned to the one on the car, if not they can divert the water into the top of the gearbox.
Yeah they were not, the seal was unattached most of the way around when we got it. Sorted now though but seems like the damage was already done…

Not the seal all the way round though good you fixed it but the drainage cup (check present) under the bonnet teat.

👍yeah, had been stood a while and it was all a bit clogged and misaligned. Tower & gearbox evident at purchase, not unexpected.
