Loose handbrake sleeve repair?

The handbrake sleeve in my A2 is completely loose, not clipped on or secured in any way.

I guess there are some clips that have been snapped off.

Are there any fixes to repair it please, beyond filling the thing with gripfill? 😄

It's a red leather one, so sadly not so easy to find a replacement from a breaker.

On the underside rear of the grip there should be a small spring clip. If present try bending it slightly to grip onto the plastic handbrake lever shroud.

If broken then finding a replacement could be a problem, so probably best not to gripfill it on. Instead try a turn or two of insulting tape and slide the grip over the top.

No clips sadly, but using insulting tape (🙊) is not a bad idea. Thanks for suggestion!

Hi,
I used this on both cars.

I put one wrap of tape around the opposite end to the release button.
Then slide the leather sleeve (handle) into place it is a snug fit and some force will be required.
If you put the tape too close to the plastic handbrake cover, it bunches up and you will need to start again. Prepare to make a few attempts to get it right.
I prefer to not use electrical tape as the adhesive is messy. The grip fill would make it extremely difficult to remove the sleeve without cutting the sleeve in half. Amalgamating tape employs friction to hold the sleeve in place. This means when the time comes you can remove the sleeve to service the handbrake.
:)👍

In summary, tape seems to be the best solution.
  • Electrical
  • PTFE
  • Self amalgamating
All work just fine :)👍
