New A2 owner

Hi Everyone

I am the new owner of a 1.4 petrol silver Audi A2, I have had a previous Audi 80, many years ago, and was very impressed with the build quality. I have often looked at the A2 and admired the shape, and the fact that it is aluminium. My A2 is on a 51 plate and has covered 102,000 miles. I have owned it for 2 weeks, and already had a new starter motor fitted, as it was screeching. The dealer paid for this fix. I am very happy with the car, and have figured how to remove the bonnet. In my opinion the build, fixtures and fittings are excellent, the car is fantastic, very well screwed together.

I like tinkering with my cars, I usually do all the oil and filter changes myself. I am yet to locate the air filter, I have looked, but can't seem to figure where it is. The car drives as new, very smooth, and comfortable. Although the mileage is on the high side, I am hoping for a couple of years loyal service from this car. I have no work shop manual, so my questions would be, is the oil and filter change straightforward ?, where is the air filter ?, and where is the pollen filter situated ?. The car is the standard 1.4 petrol. Thanks

Martyn

Welcome to A2oc. I had the same problem with sussing out how to open the bonnet .
I also have a silver 1.4 A2, is yours a Sport or SE ?

Hi Martyn,

Welcome to A2 ownership.

The air filter is a located beneath the driver’s side headlight. It is only accessible by removing the under tray, if fitted, which is a bit of a pain, but easy enough to remove if you have a set of ramps or some axle stands.
Do a search and you should find plenty of info to help you perform a standard service.

As David has said, there is no hard copy workshop manual for the A2, so the only option is software based.

Cheers

Jeff

The dry starter motor skrEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEch lol mine's been doing this for 5 years now still not got round to sorting it as it only does it when it feels like it (normally when theres lots of people around, i think it wants people to look at it lol). Air filter is located drivers side front corner very bottom and yes is accessed when under pan is removed. mine's just done over 100k and yes it is a TDi but all the rest of the bits are the same so will still wear out the same ;) i always live by the rule if you regularly service the car and look after it any car should last with no real issuses but everything will wear out at some point so its best to keep a check on things so you find them early enough so they don't get bigger

Happy motoring Phil

Welcome to the forum.

The pollen filter is found in the passenger footwell - a plastic access panels slides or pops off (I forget which) off to reveal the filter panel.

Thanks everyone for the welcome, replying to most of the replies, my A2 is just the standard 1.4, not the SE or Sport. When I have more time, I will be having a look at the pollen filter replacement, then an oil and oil filter change. The oil and filter were replaced when I bought the car, but I always have mis-trust, I like to do it myself, then I know exactly what has been used, i.e oil and filter brand. Not sure if I should purchase from Audi, or just the local car parts shop, I have one in the area where I live that is very good. Does anyone have a brand of oil that would be recommended for an A2 that has covered just over 100,000 miles ? I would presume that the oil would be 5w 40, am I correct ?
I am very impressed with the A2, it is a very well made car, and seems to have everything that I would want on a vehicle, it may be a little bumpy over uneven roads, but on the whole it is fab. I haven't seen many A2 cars in my area, but as always, when one purchases a vehicle, one starts to see them, I have a count of 5 at the moment, I suppose that is still a low count, it seems that the car is rare. Maybe a future classic. Hope everyone has a good weekend. Thanks

Martyn

Welcome again. The A2 is a brilliant car and its nice to drive a semi- rare sight on our roads. This is a very friendly forum too, with lots of knowledge to share. I was reminded of this recently when joining a ford cmax forum to learn about my dads new motor. Seems a good club and I have posted twice as an introduction then to ask a couple if questions, but not quite the support you will enjoy on here.

I usually buy my oil from GSF or ECP, or even Ebay at tiimes. Vauxhall Dexos 2 oil meets quite a few VAG standards, it certainly does for diesels on fixed service intervals, and is very cheap at £40 for 10L.

Maybe I'm not a purist, but I just buy the cheapest oil that meets the correct specification I need. I find main dealers quite expensive usually.

Hi again Martyn,

I adopt pretty much the opposite of Will, although I also do not buy oil from dealers. I doubt there is anything wrong with Will’s thinking, but I tend to buy the best oil money can buy at the correct spec, and I change after 10k-12K miles.
Maybe foolish, but I also take note of any spec changes in oil and always buy the latest spec for my engine.
My reasoning is that I wish to keep my car for a very long time and therefore I am happy to spend a little more on lubricant, in the hope it will re-pay me long term with good reliability and economy.
Also, if I feel the need to let the car loose I’m confident the lubricant will protect the engine at high RPM, and during the colder winter months when the oils is less viscous I’m confidant it will lubricate well from the first revolution.

I buy my oil from Opie Oils, who offer some decent discounts for forum members, and they also have a good website which will guide you through your choice based on vehicle model.
Opie regularly advertise their discount offers on this forum, but they can be found here:

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/

I buy all service parts direct from the dealers as the cost saving buying cheaper (from Ebay for example) is just too small to warrant the risk for me.

I hope this helps, but unfortunately I cannot answer your question as to what oil to buy as I own a TDi.

Cheers

Jeff

Thanks again for the replies, and advice. This afternoon I had a look under the parcel shelf to see where the pollen filter is housed, I will be tackling this job when I have a day off, I will tackle the oil and filter change when I borrow a friends ramps, and will check out the best place to source the oil. I am looking forward to tinkering with the A2, I love this car !

When buying oil it's important that it meets one of the following specs (these are for petrol engines) -

For long life (variable) services VW 504.00 or VW 503.00 - Also note VagCom needed to reset the variable service indicator

For std services (10k miles or 1 year) VW 504.00 or VW 50101 - Std servicing is generally considered the best option for our ageing cars. Good point is the buttons on the instrument cluster can be used to reset the service indicator (details in the owners handbook)

Cheers Spike

I replaced my oil with castrol edge 5-40 on the advice of opie oilman, and was pleased to find (a) consumption dropped, and (b) the car was so much smoother than when running on vw longlife. I had been doing 10k or less between changes from getting it at 46k and selling at 76k 18months on. Has anyone bought BJ52 OGT yet, never saw it advertised by dealer in Fareham. Cheers Colin.

Hi Martyn, fellow 1.4 petrol owner. My car is 11yr old and the engine has covered just shy of 70k miles. It has been on Quantum 10W40 oil as used by local specialist. I would say the engine hasn't skipped a beat, doesn't smoke and goes strong. I think 5W30 was factory but I have no issue with 10W40 given the engine and car is getting on a bit and my car does mostly short town journeys. The slightly thicker oil at cold may have reduced my town mpg a little but can't really be definitive. The thicker hot oil doesn't affect my motorway mpg though, managed 48mpg at 70mph riding on winter rubber. I also have it annually serviced rather than long life. I also use v-power where I can, better mpg, better throttle response.

Do check out the sticky on suspension if you're serious about keep the car and improve the ride.

Pollen filter is under the glove box that takes 5 min to change. The official filter is plain, but Stoke Audi parts has listed an active charcoal filter that is also compatible with our car. I much prefer it as i get stuck behind smelly and sooty diesel exhausts around town.

Im impressed that Humps gets better mpg with Vpower. I tried it on several occassions (2 or 3 tanks in succession) and could not improve on my mpg which was 43-44 winter 44-45 summer. The only way I have managed to improve was by swapping my beloved A2 for a Yaris T sport (1.5 105bhp) which is currrently doing 46.7mpg. Have also tried the yaris on vpower also with no noticable improvement, but will continue to run a couple of tanks every now and then as I'm sure it helps keep things clean. Incedently my local garage who recently sold a mate a 2yr old Golf 1.6 tdi said that the only time they get particulate probs is with old ladies who do less than 3k a year. In any case they always put in a tank of cleaner at each service which apparently stops the filter blocking. They said main dealers tend not to as it creates good 'repalcement' business. Thank goodness for the good local independents. Cheers Colin.
