Oil top up

Driving home this evening, my oil low indicator bleeped at me. Once I got home (with my car warm) I checked my oil level or as best I could on the dark and it looked like it was just above the minimum mark. My car was serviced about 5/6 months ago by a mechanic friend and in my service book they've ticked long life.

Can I simply top up my car using Castrol Edge 5w30 or Mobil 1 ESP 5W/30?
How much should I put in to begin with? I've never had to top up my oil before!
Is it ok to drive my car to go and buy oil?
Lastly, is buying 1L enough or should I buy 4/5L depending on the brand?

Sorry for the questions I just don't want to make a schoolgirl error with something that seems so simple.

Thanks in advance

Rhian

P.s I have a 2001 1.4 SE with about 70k

Best to top it up with longlife, you'll only need a litre bottle*. I know the Edge fits the longlife spec, don't know about the other one. Top it up with half a litre, wait a bit, then check the level again. As long as it's above the minimum mark it's fine to drive.

* Although buying 4L on a discount and using that will be cheaper in the long run.

Thank you for your speedy reply MikeMarsUK. Off I go to buy the Castrol Edge first thing!

Do I check my oil when car is warm or when cold? I've read suggestions of both on A2OC.

Thanks,

Rhian

Just adding to MM's comments, the longlife oil spec is VW 507.00 so make sure the oil you use shows this spec on the tin. Also its good practice (but not critical) to use the same oil for topping up as used for the service - if you can check this with your mechanic friend.

Thanks Spike. I'm trying to contact him now but it's proving difficult. If I can't get hold of him i'll use the Castrol as a top up.

Thanks again

Rhian

I regulary buy the long life Oil from Castrol in This ebayshop:
http://stores.ebay.de/B-F-Olshop?_trksid=p4340.l2563
And the spec, which spike says. 50700
In Denmark it is expensive, but the Germen seller ships and sells to a fair price, so price including shoppingcost is a lot cheaper than buying it in Denmark. I normalt buy 8 litre at a time (2 oilchange) but look for Your self . They have fast delivery to Denmark , aprox. 3 days .
