Has anyone else had the 3 chimes and Oil symbol come up for no apparent reason yet? It happens to me every 2 or three days at the mo'. Mentioned it to my dealer who checked things out and said that there was no fault that they could find, but said that if possible, next time it happened, could I please drive straight in to them and they would have another look!

Mike,

Presumably the sensor in the sump is playing up and needs replacing. I really do not understand dealers who send owners away with the message of come back the next time that it happens. Heavens do they not believe what they are being told.

Had a similar sort problem on my A6 - the engine would stall when cold, but only at very specific temperatures. When I first took it in they replaced a sensor in the throttle assembly, assuming that was the fault. After 3 more visits they found a crak in the throttle assembly - replacing the complete housing fixed the problem.

Com to think of it, it's not a ver similar problem, it's just that I was trying to make the point that it's not always the sensor to blame - sometimes there is a genuine fault!

Problem update - My dealer has today taken the car in to replace the sensor, the wiring and part of the dash! They have decided to do a proper job, but only after I dumped the car on their forecourt with chimes going off and the oil can flashing insanely.
Trouble is, they've given me a 2003 TDI SE with the extras mine doesn't have - DIS, Open Sky, rear electric windows etc. Parting could be sweet sorrow!

Mike,

Its only something for you to think about, but when I had my sensor replaced I thought that it was a waste of effort to pour back dirty old oil which could be very badly contaminated, so I requested new oil and a filter. At the time it also made sense because no one could put their hand on their heart and confirm that the engine was running on “Longlife” oil. Naturally I agreed that I would pay for the materials, however after the work was completed I was told there would be no charge.

Obviously the oil change meant that the computer could be reset on the Variable Service Interval, and a better check thereafter kept on whether everything was functioning correctly. The end result was a success.

Problem resolved (hopefully!) - my dealer today carried out a belt and braces repair: they have replaced the sensor, wiring harness and instrument pod! Also, they have put in new oil and filter as a matter of course. Hope this does the trick, keep you updated.

Yes John, I must agree. After initial doubts over my dealer, I am now coming round to the idea that they might be alright after all. It's just a pity that I first of all had to mention rejecting the vehicle, and then dump the A2 on their forecourt with the Oil light flashing before they would take me seriously.
I've still got to get the air-con sorted (not a musty smell, but a glue-like whiff - any ideas Kaine?) and get to the bottom of the fuel consumption business (53mpg on an open run to Coventry from Manchester and back is not good enough at 70-75 mph).
