TDI90 engine noise

Most likely hydraulic tappets.
I have had one noisy tappet on my tdi75, replaced all 6 for peace of mind.

Out of interest its odd that the top aluminium turbo/intercooler pipe appears to be missing or has been re routed somehow. Is this the norm for LHD cars from factory 🤔

Dual mass flywheel release bearing? Or a pulley bearing?

Sounds like a bearing that's got no grease in it. Spins up and abruptly stops

Yeah, that's the norm for LHD A2 TDIs. Turbo to manifold distance (and therefore volume) is significantly reduced. :)

Alternator clutch?
Yes thinking the same, you can see the lights dims in speedo on startup so something is going on with the voltage. Would be interesting to remove the aux belt.

It could also be AC comp. since it is not blowing cold, and is the coolant also the lubricant for the comp.? So loss of coolant, loss of lubrication?

If it is the tappets, the car will be scrapped.

For info: new flywheel and all related, 1 year alternator and AC comp.

Thanks for all comments!

Oil is added to the R134a gas to lubricate the system and keep the seals fresh.

Looking at the jobs you have done already you'd be on the right lines with the belt removal

Isn’t that how they sound?

Edit having listened to the original video again there is a strange sound as the engine starts. A bit like an induction leak on a normally aspirated engine but that is not possible. Under the bonnet there are a couple of rasping sounds. Possibly auxiliary belt or bearing's? Get somebody to blip the accelerator and investigate the cause. Having identified a suspect a squirt of WD sometimes changes the tone and conforms.

there are a few seconds when it is possible to see the alternator pulley and it looks like the rotation changes while that noise is happening. Maybe related to camera flicker as well but seems plausible as it used to be just after starting I heard the worst noises from mine before it eventually failed and fell off.

It could also be that the alternator is short circuiting or similar since when the high noise is coming, the lights in dash dim, and the rpm goes up.

That being said, I believe also the diesel knackering has increased and it could be that I have multiplie issues.
