Total electrical failure TDi 1.4 75 2001

Hello All,
Great to find like minded drivers out there. But I've got a bit of a problem..... No electrics, not a sausage, nada , nowt! Came home from work turned everything off, locked car. Next morning could not open with key fob (was v cold night for u k ), manual key opened door but no electrics. Battery terminals are o k battery magic eye is looking fine all fuses intact. Has anybody experienced similar?

So I presume you've opened the doors, then got into the boot with the emergency release and that's it.

Have you checked the voltage at the terminals, or the main fuse, this is right next to the positive terminal, under a little black plastic flap. I know it's hard to believe that a fuse this big would go, but I've had what Audi Stockport called a 'mechanical failure' on an 80Amp power steering fuse - apparently it hadn't blown, but was cracked!

If there is no electric anywhere, this is the main culprit.

Cheers,

Mike

Hi Johno,

Yes, it is odd that it went so quickly, but there is nothing like really cold, sub zero temperatures to test an old battery. Have you been doing mostly short journeys recently?

If your battery is still the original that came with the car, then the quickest solution is to buy a new battery. It should last you another six years.

John.

Mike (Skipton01) beat me to it.

Welcome to the club by the way. I see from the home page that you are today's newest member. Please post back to let everyone know how you got on. I suspect that there will be a number of battery related posts starting to appear as our A2s get on in years.

Hi John
Thanks for the advice. Will let you know what I find out at the weekend. With it going so quickly, I was wondering if a voltage sensor is used to cut all electrical power if it gets too low? (to save the integrity of management systems .) Or am I just complicating the job!

Hi Mike
Thanks for your advice. Will have a better chance to see whats going on down there in the boot at the weekend. Fuse next to the battery! I suppose there is some logic to it. No mention of it in the owners manual either. I'm not grumbling... really, just getting my head round the problem.

It doesn't look like a traditional fuse, it's a metal strip between 2 nuts.

Best of luck!

Cheers,

Mike

Well I'm back on the tarmac. You were right it was a exhausted battery, still don't understand how it started fine for my journey home and then in the morning...... nothing. Anyway if its any help to anybody, Audi seem to want £135 for a battery, I cough and spluttered and mentioned discount. They were very helpful, but not forth coming and said that non original batteries could some times be a slightly different dimensions resulting in fitting problems. Well to cut a long story short... My local Motor Factor did one (Banner 069 72Ah 680a) 3 year gaurantee for £70. The silver lining to the episode is that the drivers electric window is now working again... if that makes any sense!
