V70 HVAC actuator motor question

Today I.... went to Leicester and removed a tailgate, and while I was there I also removed the V70 HVAC air direction flap actuator motor as mine is not working for some reason. The car I removed it from is almost identical to mine -same age etc. The motor doesn't seem to turn freely by hand- is this OK? Does it only turn when plugged in and with a current through it? If it can be free'd up (cos it's supposed to turn freely by hand) are there any recommendations please- I have this one (it was free, too) to trial before I take the one out of my car. Thanks in Advance!

Motor itself if taken out from actuator case should turn easy, when it sits in the case together with some combined gears to operate lever and you trying to move it on the "flap end" it could be hard to move sometimes

Great, thanks, its actually siezed solid in the case it seems- is there a way of safely cracking open the casing?

you can open case to replace motor, position feedback potentiometer, gears. Just mark up any external levers/gear against potentiometer position to be re-assembled in same way

Great, thanks. I will try firstly to simply plug in my 'new' motor to the loom with my original motor in place to see if it moves under power. Then, if not- Plan 'B'!

I'm going to simply plug in my 'new' motor into my plug for the existing motor before I remove anything but trim. Does anyone know if my 'new' motor will need coding on VCDS so I can tell if its working or not without guessing about the need to code it?

Motor will not need coding but must be fitted correctly to allow full range of movement. Yes VCDS can function check the motor.

If it wasn't open so gear is in factory setup then for test you can fit it but vcds basic settings should be done anyway

Motor is the obvious choice but the plastic track the flaps pins run in may be jammed or even jumped off.

Yes my car will not blow air onto my feet, and the air will not shut off for the main vents. The VCDS plug in says its a problem for the V70
Similar problem as I had then. In my case it was the internal potentiometer that was worn and gave wrong resistance value on parts of the working range.
But I exchanged the potentiometer for a new and solved the problem.
Btw, dont expect to be able to turn the output shaft by hand, the gearing inside will prevent it.

OK, thats very helpful- my VCDS message says 'out of range' so maybe thats it. The 'new' one was free, so I had it, but its also from a 2001 car. Its possible the runners are jammed too. I won't know until I look, but at least I will try and have every base covered when I start or diagnose - meaning I can do the job as quickly as I can!

Also- I would like to ask just in case both of my V70 don't work- how did you change the potentiometer and where do I get one. Thanks for your help

If your car is built 2003 or earlier (as mine) it is a bit trickier since these have the first generation of HVAC actuators and new potentiometer for these are no longer available.
I followed the paths of the german A2club and bought pots for the newer generation, asked a friend to 3D-print a plastic support adapter (black item in the picture).

I can see if I can find some links for you.
