didn't bother have the service today, the car was running bad this morning, stutering really bad, had to get gears abd the light still flashing. took it back to the garage she bought it from. they are looking at it

Yes, 1.6 fsi, was number 2 coil pack. This will have been the 9th since new. (although the last one fitted were March 03) £150 lighter. I had never been happy since 03 and kept taking it back. The diagnostics showed nothing atall. Since this new one has been fitted it has run a lot better. Has this coil been going since 03??? I dont know. Tried the old tear jerking story to Audi customer services who gave no sympathy whatsoever. The garage were nice enough to give me a tenner off. But not entirly confident. Just waiting for 1, 3 and 4 to go. People keep telling me its a cold weather thing. If it is I'm off to BMW.

George,
Audi extended the warranty for coil packs to 5 years from date of first registration. If you had the job carried out by an Audi dealer I'd go back and ask for your money back. There was a lot of issues with coil packs failing on all VAG products, not just Audi and a modified pack was produced. It was a well known and documented problem. The price for coil packs has fallen considerably, I think circa £12 each is todays price. Call Audi customer care and ask them about the extended guarantee for coil packs and give details of the bill. If you speak nicely to them they are nice back! My experience anyhow.

By the way I had 7 coil packs in total for my 1,6FSI. None in nearly 2 years since the uprated versions. And the motor pulled stronger after the new versions....

after 3 days of looking at the car, they now say the head gasket has gone. they wanted to charge her half of the £1100 they said it would cost. then they said they would cover it because of the inconvienience. then suggested she has the timing belt changed for the charge of £300, she kindly declined that offer. just waiting for the car to come back now.

Hi kr1s77
The garage was obviously trying to offset the cost of the head gasket repair by charging £300 for a cambelt change. As they have to cover just about everything when they remove the head there is virtually no extra labour involved. On that basis, a fair price would be around £100 to cover the new cam belt, tensioner pulley and idler etc.
It would be sensible to offer to pay for the parts to avoid any trouble at a later date should the cambelt fail (heaven forbid) You would naturally blame their workmanship and they would say you ignored their recommendation to change the cambelt to prevent this happening.

Cheers Spike

Mark,
thanks for the info. Already knew about the 5 year warranty. Tried speaking to customer service, they said (in their words) A2 coil packs were not covered but all others were and it is beyond the realms of any customer service to offer any sort of discount. I think its just a call centre more than anything else and it depend on who you get. Anyway, car is pulling well now. How easy are these thing to fit yourself??????? Wouldnt mind having a go myself next time.

George,
It was Audi customer care themselves who told me about the extended guarantee, when I had thee packs go withing one month. And unusually they changed all three remaining old style pack for newer versions even though they had not failed (yet anyway).

I would go back and have a good old winge, ask to speak to a supervisor. My A2 was 5 years old 2 days ago, so I am not covered now, but as I had no problems in nearly 2 years I don't worry anymore, and like you the performance did improve a lot. But these parts are identical to VW, Seat and Skoda, so they will be covered, I'd ask why not Audi too? I'd quote this site as other members have successfully claimed coil packs outside of the normal warranty but within 5 years. You see my name, use it. Bradford Audi did the work and were informed by Audi about the extended warranty.

My idependant service provider told me about the price for coil packs falling to circa £12 each. I don't work on the car myself but I understand that it's not a difficult job. £150 is well OTT.

George, if you get any further problems with Audi customer services, point out the following to them:

The part number for the A2 coil pack is 036 905 715E, and it is EXACTLY THE SAME as the part used in the A3 BAG, BLF and BLP engines. It is also used in certain VW Golf and Bora models too, so their statement that the A2 alone is not covered, when all others are is nonsense.

For your info, the prices of the parts are £29.90 for the coil pack and £5.37 for the spark plug (part number 101 000 068 AA).

Hope this helps,

Mike
