Wheel advice

Hi all,

Looking for advice on wheel size.

Would 16” wheels from a 2014 A3 fit my 2001 A2 ? I think they are 5 x 112, but thought I read somewhere ( can’t find the post now of course) that I need 5 x 100.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

You do indeed need either 5x100, or suitable adapters to 5x112. You also have to be aware of the offset (ET value) of the wheels, which will have to take account of any adapters used. Best bet is stick with wheels from the A2, A3 8L, A1, Mk1 TT, Polo, Fabia etc.

Thanks a million, appreciate the advice

16" alloy rims tend to weigh around 10kg each.

15" pepperpot alloy rims weigh around 5.7kg each.

Multiple the difference in weight by four, and that's a huge difference in rotational and unsprung weight.

Drivers and passengers prefer the comfort of 185/60R15 to the lower profile and harder riding 195/50R16.

185/60R15 are cheaper than 195/50R16, and tend to be quieter...plus less drag so more mpg and a higher top speed. And don't forget the faster acceleration from the lighter wheels and more nimble handling.

Michelin CrossClimate 2 prices on blackcircles
185/60R15 84H SL (Euro Label C C 69dB) £77.72
185/60R15 88V XL (Euro Label B C 69dB) £81.97
195/50R16 88V XL (Euro Label C C 69dB) £132.29

XL Tyres are best avoided on A2’s due to the stiffer side wall they have as tyre designed for heavier vehicles like vans and SUV’s which an A2 obviously isn’t. Not only do they give a firmer less complaint ride, from memory they’re heavier.
