Who can tell me how to remove the plastic on the handbrake

Do you mean the grab handle or the piece of plastic cover behind it?

Pull grab handle forward. ( Requires a good tug!)
remove trim ring same way
Unclip and lift vertically the plastic cover. (There are three clips) Slide cover forward over the lever.
Job done

Be careful before tugging as there is a small hole on the underside of the cover that you need to insert a small flat head screwdriver in to release the tab.

Steve just beat me to it, but the grab handle is held into the surround by a couple of plastic tangs on an earlier car, or a wire loop over a plastic lug on later ones. There's one or two holes under the end of the surround, if two then poke with both ends of a straightened-out paperclip, or a small screwdriver for one hole, to release the grab handle.
