View Full Version : Cruise Control Confusion...

Hi
I am about to take delivery of a used A2 1.4TDi Sport (upgrading from a Honda S2000!) which unfortunately does not have cruise control fitted as standard. I am VERY interested in having it retro-fitted but as the car is only 9 months old I want to maintain my Audi UK warranty.
I have spoken to many Audi dealers in the UK and they say one of three things:
1) It's easy, just change lever and tell the CanBus that cruise is active
2) It's not possible because of the CanBus
3) It is possible, but can be a nightmare
Now, I do lots of work for car manufacturers and have a very strong background in electronics. So I would say from other postings here that answer 1) is the correct one, but there can be slight complications relating to what wiring was fitted in the car originally.
My question is has ANYBODY got their local Audi dealer to do this upgrade (UK only please) or can anybody recommend a local Audi dealer whose technicians can cope with the concept? I know AMD effectively offer this service but a)It may cause warranty problems and b)Through my work I can probably get the mod done at cost from a dealer.
Regards
Ricardo (1st time poster and soon to be A2 driver)

I had it retrofitted. It's easy, change the stalk, tell the computer there's a cc stalk and it's done.
A normal mechanic can do it in one hour, the steering wheel has to be removed.

...which is why I also want to do the multi-function steering wheel at the same time as the stalk... stalk is about £24 plus VAT from Martyn at VAG... wheel is £200 plus VAT... But I still don't know if my car is CAN-bus equiped...
But Ricardo: I also think 1 is the correct answer...

Thanks for the replies.
Dennis: I agree that its simple, but dealers in the UK are reluctant to do it...probably a cost issue when you consider the price of cruise as an option (in the UK). I imagine talking to the CanBus is simple but unfortunately I dont speak the language so need to find a UK dealer who is willing to do it, hence my question.
Johan: All A2's have CanBus, its basically the method by which all the electrical components of the car talk to each other. A computer network with "messages" rather than individual wires simply supplying power or not. I think your real question should be "does my car have the interface wires in place so I can connect the wheel and stalk directly to the CanBus or will I need a new mini-loom and have to connect that along with the wheel & stalk.
If you look at AMD's photo's they contain the stalk and a small loom. I think the "problem" with retro-fitting bits to A2's is whether or not reduntant wiring was included in the build and if not how tricky it is to install the neccesary wiring in a finished car. It appears that in "some" A2's the wiring is in place and as such the upgrade is simple. Without the wires you REALLY need to know what you are doing.
So, is there anybody out there who has had cruise retro-fitted by a UK Audi dealer and if so where???
Cheers all
Ricardo
If anyone can find out I'd be interested. It would be good if we can get the VAG-COM tool to do it, I just need to find out where in the UI to enable it.

Ade: why is this list of things our £250 tool can do such a mystery? Did they not send any literature with it? For that amount of money you would expect something surely... Because for £24 plus VAT I'm definately doing the cruise... but then need the tool to set it up!

I got a OBD-II board from this guy:
http://www.andywhittaker.com/ecu/obdii_hardware.htm
It cost me about £14 to build (if you have soldering skills)
or he sell them pre built.
You can then get a demo version of VAG-COM, or buy the full copy
for $99.
I've got the demo version, which enables you to read all paramters in the ECUs. The full version allows you to set cruise control etc.
Well, tbh, I just don't have the time at the moment to look into it. The UI isn't set up in plain english so you press a button to 'activate cruise' for example and the tool then translates that to be set code 1110001101000 in register 46. You have to go into specific areas of the computer, e.g. register 46 and then work out what the codes mean and then add the codes, etc. I'm sure it's easy enough though. If anyone wants to point me in the right direction, please feel free to do so. As an aside, code locations can differ between Audi models and we are trailblazing a little with the A2.
Not real excuses I know, just an explanation of my lack of progress.

I've just had a look around in the directories on the disk. There is no manual. You need to know what you want to do and where it is located and as it's in binary, etc. you need the workshop manuals. That's why a lot of it will be experimentation and asking Martyn @ VAG PArts to ask one of his ex buddies as a garage, etc. For example, I would have expected the door locking stuff we did to be located in the 'Central Locking' controller, but it must have been moved, hence the confusion. It wss moved into 'Central Convenience' controller, yet the door locking one is still there - empty. Also, within this controller the windows up/down is within a 'sub-register' or something, hidden away....
I must admit, for the money, I'd have expected a manual, but there you go. I'll ask Martyn if he can find out from his contacts.

Hey Deheld...
If all else fails I will travel to the Netherlands and get it done there, I am sure they would like the business. Where was the dealer who fitted yours? email address or phone number etc?
Thanx

That was the dealer in Capelle A/D IJssel near Rotterdam.
The dealer is called "De Koning"
Wormerhoek 5-7
2905 TX CAPELLE A/D IJSSEL
tel: 010-4599450
fax: 010-4599490

Maybe it's wise to call them first because you need a RHD stalk.
Good luck !

Thanks deheld! you said the magic word "Rotterdam" :) Only a pop across the pond then. One more question, any idea what the cost would be? (roughly) If they had a problem with the stalk I could get hold of one over here.
Cheers

One and a half year ago I paid 208 Euro's to have cruisecontrol installed after delivery of the car. The price can vary if the car is not delivered via that dealer.
The dealer is located in Capelle a/d IJssel which is the westside of Rotterdam.
