Gas struts -- rear hatch

Hello everyone again

During a trip to Sainsbury's I noticed that the top of the gas struts that lift the rear hatch seem to be corroded at the top. I can't understand how this could have happened.

I have noticed that the hatch doesn't quite spring up as it should and you have to push it quite a bit before the struts kick in.

Is this a common problem? Has anyone any ideas to how such corrosion should appear?

I`ve seen it before, i think it`s a commom problem on the first A2 (till modelyear 2002?). You should ask your dealer what to do, maybe it will be replaced with no cost.
