It's been mentioned and discussed before, but finally the social everyone has been waiting for will be going ahead next year! [23]

The plan is as follows:

The trip will include a visit to Neckalsum to see the A2 being built and for a factory tour. Also to visit Ingolstadt to see the Audi museum and everything else Audi related!
It is a 630 miles trip to Nuremberg from London, and I appreciate that not everyone who wants to go lives in London so in order to keep the trip down to 4 days there is likely to be a day of intensive driving on the first and last days. But I'm sure that even the convoy drive down will be memorable! We will be aiming to make Nuremberg our base for 2 nights as it is fairly close to both Neckalsum and Ingolstadt. As with all A2OC social events, there will be plenty of time to do your own thing with no strict agenda except for the Audi visits. There will also one official party night, the venue of which will be decided nearer the time.

At present, we are aiming to hold this event during late April/early May.

It's pointless going to the trouble of organising this if no one is interested in going. I won't lie, there will be costs involved - obviously significant fuel costs, insurances, the channel crossing by EuroTunnel, 3 nights in a hotel, food, bar bill [24] etc. But this will be a one off opportunity to see the A2 production line while you still can and it will be a true confirmation to the Audi world that there is a well organised and united international A2 club in existence.

In addition, although this will be an official A2OC event, we are going to be inviting members of the German A2 Forum to join us if they wish so that there may be even more of us and a greater presence. Some of you may have met Frido at the February social event after he made the trip from Germany to join us for the day - Frido has very kindly offered to help coordinate and organise this trip.

Please consider this whole idea and let me know your thoughts, preferences and ideas...and tell me if you might be interested in coming along.

The main question will be cost of lodgings and cost of EuroTunnel. Can Frido enlighten us on Hotels or Guest house rough prices.

Put me down as a provisional yes - hopefully with the wife up for coming along as well.

Don't drink drive! Not only is it socially unaceptable, it also harms A2's.

Generally hotels in Europe are significantly cheaper than in the UK. I was amazed at the price of a decent hotel in France compared to the equivalent in the UK. For example in Nuremburg, the InterCityHotel Nürnberg (4 star) is £73.00 per room per night. Or Ramada-Treff Hotel Nuernberg (4 star) is £63.00 per room. Finally, the Mercure Congress Nürnberg (3 star) is £48.00 per room.

Euro Tunnel costs vary, but current estimate is about £113 return. Of course that's without investigating if we can get some sort of group booking discount.

Frido and I will put together a comprehensive price guide in a month or so to give everyone an idea of the prices.

I will make a provisional list of people interested, but there's no way anything can go ahead without deposits being taken and a real committment being made by people, as it's just not fair on Frido or myself to go to so much trouble if people aren't fully committed.

Stuart, I am really interested in this one, it will depend entirely on chemo finishing in time, (planned to end about end April, but...), also if I can persuade at least one son to share driving, because chemo leaves you knackered. Ideally I may get 2 sons to come, all 3 and the beer may run out! I even bought the book "Learn German in 3 months" when you fist mentioned it. I'll open it and read it now!

Something to consider about the timing of this event - May Day weekend. I for one would prefer it if the social didn't clash with this as the number of tourists (people driving slowly) on the roads will be double.
I think Easter falls early April this year so no concerns there.

After chatting to the wife, we are both up for making the pilgrimage - like you say Stuart, a once in a time opportunity for most of us.

UPDATE: I called Audi again to confirm the date and we have a firm booking
for Thursday, May 6th, at 8.45 in the morning for a tour in Neckarsulm. I
tried to get a tour on a Monday or Tuesday, but the earliest Monday they
could give us is in October, so I took the May date.
I checked some hotel prices here in Nuremberg for the date in question, at
http://www.ibis.de (IBIS Hotel Marientor), for €49 per night, and the
Mercure Congress Hotel Nuremberg at http://www.mercure.com for €112 per
night (both 2 person rooms, price is per room). I will check some other Hotels, but these are at the low and middle
end of the price range.

I will post updates as soon as I know more.

Cheers looking forward to going
Most probable i will travel down to Folkstone on the 4th
let me know what other people are doing once we have comnfirmed number of people going.
Would be good to travel as a group!!

I'm definitely in for this... how many people are thinking of doing it over 2 days and how many in one?

rac.co.uk says:
Total distance: 534.3 miles (859.9 km ) to Neckarsulm
Total estimated time: 10 hours and 54 min
Don't drive tired. Plan a 15-minute break into your journey for every two hours you'll be on the road.
If you feel tired whilst driving stop at a service station for a coffee and take a short nap before continuing.
Average speed of 30 Miles/h on national and country roads.
Average speed of 60 Miles/h on motorways.

for me personally since i will be bringing my girl friend a 2 day travel to the social visit will be more appealing.
i was thinking a short leg for the first day then a longer leg of travel on the second day.
Wanted to be at the channel crossing however we decide to cross early on the 5th so as to make sure i am not late as for the past 2 socials i have always arrived late/last A2 to arrive.

So if people are interested in meeting up i thought personally folkstone/dover would be a safe bet.
Since then we can travel to France together and the A2's that want to bomb off can do leaving the slightly slower A2's to travel in some sort of convoy since safety in numbers and if anyone has a problem on the way they are'nt entirely on there own.

Cheers

Quick update: So far 13 people have signed up for this event.

That leaves 12 places free which I sincerely hope get filled but if not, can I suggest that we try to fill them by offering the trip to non-members - i.e. put a posting the 'General' section of this forum for those who haven't seen the webpage on the club site. If the places still do not get filled then they will be offered to members of the German A2 Club.

I am sure that you understand the amount of work that Frido (and a little by myself) have and will put into making this event successful, organised and great fun for everyone and so as a result and to show your commitment to coming, we will be asking for a small deposit from you which will be refunded to you at Nuremburg.

Finally, for those coming from the UK; please do bare in mind that it really is a very long drive to Nuremburg and unless you truly do have a problem with booking time off work, can I suggest that you consider breaking up the journey with a stopover at Aachen, Cologne or Mastricht.

Hi all,
Michelle and I will also be coming in May to the meeting in Ingolstadt. The ferry Calais / Dover is very easy and probably the quickest route for most of you.
For those of you who are travelling down from Calais..and are taking the route past Cologne ; you are very welcome to take a break here..3 or 4 could even spend the night with us and we can travel down then together.
Small tip...although there is no speed limit in Germany ; Belgium and Holland have a limit of 120 kmph and are really strict about enforcing it ( to the point that they can even confiscate your car...they then put it up for auction and you basically have to buy it back!!)
Steve ...its a pity that you aren't coming ...it is just a meeting and even Toyota drivers are welcome...maybe we can organise an A2 for you in Germany!!
As I said it is no problem to use us to have a break here..be it short or overnight...just give us a shout!!

I for one would definitely want a break half way through... seems as if we will all be arriving from so many places that a convoy drive sounds a bit difficult!

I would prefer EuroTunnel as well as it really is far less of a hassle than a ferry and you exit straight onto the French motorway in Calais... but closer the time I guess special offers etc on HoverSpeed vs Train can be compared (HoverSpeed nearly as fast as train and miles faster than a ferry... so my 2nd choice if we need to go on water...)

Looking forward to it already!

Dear Stuart, Yes I am almost certainly up for the May trip so please book me in probably with wife, but will be returning from bank/holiday weekend in Slovenia, coming north on A9 to Nurnberg, on the 5th. so need directions to meet in Nurnberg and an idea of where Neckarsulm is located. Cheaper hotel would be preferred and I must apologise but will probably be in V6 TT not my A2 as its a better ride for such a long trip!!

Hi Alex,
That's great - but when you know for sure, let me know and I'll put you down on the list. There's 10 places left at present, so you shouldn't have a problem if you let me know in a couple of weeks.

I would love to come but SWMBO has no interest in seeing the factory and we are also moving house (Subject to contract) so everything else is on hold.

Hello all!

Today I got a written confirmation from the people at Audi for our tour, they also sent a menu list from their restaurant, if we can decide on a menu, we can eat there after the tour (the prices are reasonable). I will send each one of you the web adresses of 4 hotels I checked, the price ranges from 34 to 76 GBP per night for a double room. 3 of them are in the city center and one of them is near the autobahn, but the city center can be reached in 10 Minutes. It would be nice if eah of you could email me when you will arrive and from where, so I can send you the route to the hotel you choose.

Bye, Frido.

Frido,

thanks for all the work you're doing..we haven't heard anything from Audi yet, but once we do we will pass on the telephone to you.

Stuart, could you please bring us a black leather armrest fro the A2 when you come over.
We're looking forward to seeing you all..it'll be a great evening together.
Can someone bring some things from the UK with them for us??

Mary und Ich will be driving over via Schwelm/Wuppertal in West fahlen to see relatives on the way - how about we meet up for a Schwelmer Pils before driving on - Duisburg isn't so far from Schwelm as Nottingham!
