Aaaaaargh!

Thought it was an appropriate subject for this topic!

I drove in to work this morning for 22 miles without noticing that I had a flat rear tyre! How is it possible that I didn't notice?! :(

Needless to say that the tyre is completely written off and as you well know the Michelin is on back order in the UK and unavailable in every Kwikfit! So I have been forced to order the Pirelli otherwise my car would be off the road until the Michelin is available.

Does anyone know how far you drive safely on a space saver wheel?

Don`t think there is a Max distance limit just a max speed limit.

Well it was at 6:30 am, so there weren't that many people around!
The annoying thing is that a collegue noticed that it looked low/flat yesterday but didn't say anything...she only told me today.

I don't think there is distance limit either. Just make sure it is inflated correctly and stick to the maximum rated speed. (I don't have one, but my guess is 80km/h / 50mph)

I don't think the fellow road users are to blame really. It's hard to spot a flat tire when the tires are as low as the 185/50. The rim seems to ride to street all the time.
Moreover, you have to find an opportunity to signal people, and when's that? Do you have to start some frantic waving at a light?
Even if they did, I would ignore these idiots myself...!

The max speed is definitely 50mph and I've inflated it to the correct psi.
It's going to take me ages to get home tonight at that speed!

www.stapletons-tyres.co.uk are doing a normal Goodyear GT2 in size 155/70 R15 78T for £27 including fitting so might be better than the standard space saver. At least you can go 190km/h with this "normal" tyre.

Thanks Smartboost for the suggestion, but I've got hold a Pirelli as I can't wait until a Michelin is availablle - I need to use my car every day to get to work. Got it from etyres in the end (http://www.etyres.co.uk/) as they have been kind enough to give the A2OC a discount (see marketplace), I thought I'd give them some business, so they are coming to my office tomorrow to fit it.

Do you have any idea how slow 50mph is when you're on a single lane A road or a even a dual carriageway?!! What a nightmare it was getting home tonight!!

Space saver tyres are generally designed to last for no more than 100miles with normal use-this means no burning rubber or screaching round corners!! However, I have seen cars driving around my area for ages with the space saver fitted doing normal speeds.

No distance /time limit - as ling as there is the right amount of tread it is OK.

The speed limit applies because it is different to the one at the other side of the same axle, this applies whatever kind of tyre is on the other side, even a z-rated. One unidirecitonal-one asymetric, one standard-one unidirectional etc are all limited to 50mph. Remember its your life at risk.

The space saver is purely a short term measure and should only be used to get you to the tyre fitter. You can be fined for using the spacesaver over an extended period.

Taking the law literally any space saver is illegal for any distance since it is different to the tyre on the other end of the axle (even the "full size spare" you can get as an option on a new Mondeo).

The point is that there is nothing in their construction to limit their use other than tread depth requirements which are no different to normal tyres.

Use should be limited to what is absolutely necessary.
