New to A2 ownership but from reading handbook and this forum I think that Castrol SLX Longlife II is suitable for a 2001 1.4 tdi, based on services being carried out using the service indicator. Am i right?

Yep, spot on, 0w-30 is for variable and 5w-40 is for fixed service intervals.
