I don't know whether this has ever been discussed before, but I'm interested in knowing what car people ran before buying their A2.
Mine was a 1994 Porsche 968 - 240bhp, 0-60 in 6 secs and 160mph. A bit of a change compared to the 1.4SE I bought 3 weeks ago to replace it...

BTW: For summer I rented a BMW C1 "motorcycle" 4 month ago (The one with the roof) You can get it fo very small monthly rates here in Germany because BMW has problems to sell it. Like the A2 BMW wants to stop production in the near future (Too expensive). This also has an aluminium space frame. Very economic and lots of fun driving without helmet!

Slightly OT but has anyone seen the A2 in the European Owners gallery section on the A2OC page 21 OMG looks WOW!! must of been very expensive for all that retrofitting and stylings, does anyone know how much it would cost to get all those options fitted to an A2?

The cars that A2 owners have previously possessed has brought to mind a conversation which I had with my dealer once, in which they stated that purchasers of A2’s would be greatly valued by the dealership because they might well climb the ladder up to an A8. Putting aside that Whitehouse Audi never valued my custom anyway, I did mention at that time that I certainly had no intention of even desiring an A8 when I had reached a stage in my life where I had driven numerous nice cars, and was no longer prepared to spend mega money maintaining a more desirable set of wheels. Indeed I pointed out that my goal for the future was to spend as little as possible – perhaps based on the theme of downsizing.
I had never believed that I was alone in my attitude of purchasing an A2, but the key point of interest is that in glancing through previous cars owned by other A2 owners it would appear on the face of it as though I am part of the majority – and not within a minority group. If this is the case then clearly Audi dealers have got their marketing strategy all wrong.
It’s a deviation from the topic, but for me times have greatly changed. I remember in the early 1970’s frequently pulling up at Pedestrian Crossings in my company Rolls Royce and being confronted with countless smiling faces looking in admiration (perhaps that someone so young was enjoying themselves), but those days have long gone. In more recent years a past fishing friend of mine (Jim Davidson) felt compelled to get rid of his RR, because he was fed up with people spitting at it, or scratching it whilst it was parked up. Why such levels of resentment and bitterness exist in the year 2002 is totally beyond me, but for sure the situation appears to be getting worse by the day.
Someone’s I wonder what the future really does hold, and I confess I can see a time where if one is not driving an “old banger” on the streets of London, then it will be viewed by many as intimidating – and likely become a target for vandalism/abuse.

The car the A2 replaced was a Peugeot 206 CC 2.0SE, Leather, aircon - Fast, leaky a fortune to insure and doesn't even have space for a spare! - lasted 6 months.
Before that was a Renault Megane Scenic Alize 1.6, Aircon - faster than it felt but rolled in the corners - was falling apart at 3 years old.
Micra 1.0L

2002 1.4 Petrol SE, silver with climate control.
The above cars are/were the second car in parallel with (in reverse)
Passat 1.8T SE now - great car, company wont let me chip it!)
Passat 1.8 SE temporary car waiting for the turbo - no torque like all modern 1.8s)
Vectra 2.0 LS 16 valve turbo diesel - 53 mpg over 43k miles shames the A2.
Vectra 1.8 GLS - first company car, temporary car while waiting for the diesel.
1990 Sierra 1.8GLX saloon - Bought second hand in 1992, much better than the 1.6.
1983 Sierra 1.6L Bought new, ran for 9 years for approx £1000 including services so cannot complain!
1981 Fiesta 1.0L - Replaced when children arrived.
1969 Morris Minor - Second hand buy in 1978 - sold for more that we paid for it! On cross plies the only car I could slide in the dry without really trying - quite an experience!
In the past 3 years since opting out the company car scheme:-
Nissan Almera Gti - Very under rated car. Huge fun.
Subaru Impreza Turbo - Great Car but £1200 insurance & 19mpg too expensive to run.
Peugeot 307 XSi - A hugely disappointing car with dreadful dealer service (p/x'd for A2)

In reply to JDi:
A recent Autoexpress article said that roughly a third of cars parked in London get damaged in one way or other.
Even so, I still cannot imagine that a classic car would attract such a response. The modern flash stuff, in the hands of a young male, I can believe - a friend's brand new golf was keyed just a few weeks after delivery, while parked outside his house.
I have a feeling that it has something to do with more and more ne'er-do-wells doing very nicely indeed.
Before, if you did see someone like Jim Davidson, someone who had through hard work pulled themselves from their modest backgrounds, driving a RR you would think "Good on him. Well done".
These days, many such people do exist, but a much larger minority than before have got where they are today through not so commendable ventures. These people have left a lot of (ex-)friends back on the housing estates who resent it just a tad that they have done well, and left them in the mire. Hence a resentment of all those doing well.
OK, then there's the lack of a police presence and also public apathy, which means that they know that they can easily get away with it. Hell, they can get away with murder in broad daylight!

-1973 Jag (not sure what it is called, but it was the saloon with 6cylinders and the two petrol tanks - there was a switch to choose either of them. The car was terrible!! I mean it was huge and hat preatty much every option imagineable, but all in really poor quaility. That was besides the fact that I went through 100liters of only the best and most expensice premium quality petrol in less than 400km or about 250miles or so??!! )
-2 Opel D-Kadett ((beginning of 80's Astra) one was 1.2liter (blew that engine to pieces) the other 1.3SR, both in white - aweful!!)
-VW-Caddy (1.6liter Golf 140bhp tuned GTI-Engine fully lowered and one hell of a ride!! Still have it just need to have the time to continue rebuilding it) (Oh yes!! It is Apple-Green!! Yuck!!!!)
-Golf MKIII GTD lots of extras but engine gave up on me fairly quick!! Was not amused!!
-BMW 320 Coupe E30 excellent car bar the image and the fuel consumption.
