Saw a beetle the other day with the 17" audi alloys like mine, but bigger wider tyres!
I've scratched my alloys already(gutted, any tips on how to patch them up?) due to the alloy protruding the tyre, why are they like this. I don't think I've ever seen this on any other car/alloy. Have Audi tried to cut costs by going for a thinner tyre.

I scratched one wheel on my S3 - mu Audi dealer charged £40 to repair it. You can probably do better - try a decent paint shop.

As I mentioned before our local dealer had to get their demo A2 sport wheels refurbished (as a set) twice in 6 months.
Your local dealer is a good starting point. Ask them who they use to get there wheels refurbished. They tend to use mobile repairers - not as good as being sent away but normally fine for minor scuffs on newish wheels
When I had my old A6 Competition Alloys refurbished it was approx £50 + vat per wheel to have them sent away. I used Monty's Wheels & Tyres in Iver.

Do the alloys stand proud of the wheel arches? Then the narrower tyre is down to legislation - the tyre tread must be within the confines of the body work. I remember seeing a heavily modified Merc SL once: flared wheel arches, yard wide (almost!) tyres. The tread on the tyres was much narrower than the wheel itself, so the side walls of the tyre were angled inwards.
Would fitting a wider tyre prevent so much damage?
