View Full Version : Audi Driver International 2006
Hi folks,
I am doing some forward planning to see how many people would be interested in attending this year's Audi Driver International event on Saturday October 14.
Once again it will be taking place at Castle Combe race circuit in Wiltshire.
This year, we were looking to better all previous attendance records - the images of which can be seen here:
http://www.a2oc.net/gallery/browseimages.php?c=20
However - the organisers have said that they can only provide space for 10 A2s. This is unfortunate, as we could probably have rustled up more vehicles this year. Anyway - if you can make it, let me know, and I'll keep a track of owners that can make it. I'd happily leave my A2 at home if it means that we can get more folk along.
Alternatively, wooly will be drumming up support for other social activities during the year - so hopefully will will all be able to meet up somewhere.
You've got 9 months notice. If you look at the Googlemap - Castle Combe is fairly well located to be reachable by most of our members. Those of you coming further afield can usually find plenty of accomodation locally.
The A2OC should make more of an impression at the event this. Some suggestions for things that we could bring along include:
- Mini-marquees, trestle tables and chairs/beanbags
- Games
- VAG-COM diagnostics check
- Merchandise sales
- A2 Photo gallery
- Cruise Control retro fitting (if Skipton is up for it ;) )
- (Any other mods)
If you have any other ideas - post them here.
For further information about Audi Driver International see their web site:
www.audidriverinternational.co.uk (http://www.audidriverinternational.co.uk)
Or ring them on: 01525 750 500
If you are able to attend - please visit the following page and click on the appropriate link at the bottom of the text:

Let's see if we can beat our previous best attendance record!

I'll be there, chemo and big C permitting. I'm sure that Peter will bring the A2 down anyway, we really enjoy the day and the company.
For those who know me, the latest verdict (after a years worth of weekly chemo) is that the cancer is stable. This must be good news as it hasn't got worse, or better. This year at Castle Combe will celebrate (if that's the word) 10 continuous years of chemotherapy etc., etc.
I hope to see Wooly, Shezlee, and all other locals when I occupy my country seat, OK it's a caravan, in Chippenham this year.

I'd be very interested. I'm not far from Castle Combe (no excuse really!) so if it's held there again, I'll be on for it.
I have raced around the track in a Renault 5 Gt turbo, many years ago! (1989!) I remember the 2nd or 3rd right-hander being quite quick! :) Don't hold me to that though!
Anyway, it's the A2s and more interesting stuff that's worth going to see! It'd be good to see a professional driver going round sideways in a group B rally car!
Here's looking forward to some major tyre-smoke! :D

Have put the date in my diary!
Please can you note the change in admission for this event. Due to the popularity of the event, the organisers are limiting club stands to 10 cars each. There will be parking for other vehicles attending - so there is no reason that you shouldn't come along regardless ;) However, only the 10 cars registered would be eligable for the track drive around (So, if we get 4 people per registered car, that means at least 40 of us can go along - 50 if we have the bench seats ;) )

2004 was a very good event, sorry I couldn't make 2005. I'll definitely be there this year but not sure whether to take our A2 or TT ~ oops! probably get sacked if I take the TT. Really though, I would like to reserve a place as an A2 is much rarer than a TT.

I hope to be there again this year. Last year was a really enjoyable day. The 10 car limit for the stand seems a little mean. Given the A2 compact dimensions, surely we could get an increase to say 12 !!

Hi Lee
Look forward to seeing you All again this year
im thinking that as we have a lot more people showing an interest this year ,
last year i mailed the passes too people and some people could not make it so this year instead of me posting the passes to people before hand i think we could meet up at the big village car park and i will hand
out the passes from there ......
It would be great if we could all get there for 8:30 in the morning and arrive at the event together but obviously with people travelling from all over the country and traffic this is not going to happen so if someone stays in the village car park for a while then the passes can be handed out when people turn up.......
REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO MEETING YOU ALL .......

Sounds nice, and it has been a while since I attended the last meeting, that was the factory visit in Ingolstadt.
But I am currently in Canada and I will be back just on October 12, so it's a little close together...
It would have been the last meeting for me, since the A2 being replaced soon, but I'll continue on that soon.
Have fun and drive safe !

Very good advice if you go down the hill into the village you've gone past the Car Park........
We are going to attempt to meet up beforehand in order to get the passes handed out (a time of 8:30 am is suggested). One pass per car is required to be displayed in each car windscreen so if you dont think you can make it for 8:30 can you let ME know - and I'll post you your pass in advance.
You may think this is a little early but believe me if you dont get there early enough then you may loose your spot on the stand ........
Places are very competitive between different Owners Clubs......

Wooly, I would like my pass in the post, I have to rely on others to get to me on time, and punctuality is not their strong point. If on time we would proceed to the car park anyway so we can move off together.
Do we pay admission fees? Once I did, other times I didn't.
There is a hotel in Chippenham on Morrisons roundabout, it's one of the chains, sorry I can't remember the name, it's £50 per room per night, and 10 mins from CC.

Hi all,
It feels like a lifetime ago that I was so involved in the A2OC especially as it seems to be still going from strength to strength! I'm really pleased you have such a good committment from 30 A2 owners to attend at Castle Coombe, I hope the weather is good as it will make all the difference on the day. I would have loved to have come to see everyone again but unfortunately have a committment that day that I cannot cancel. I anyone sees Martyn from VAG Parts, please tell him I said hello!
Hope you have a great event!
Stuart.
Cheers Stuart. Forecast is currently sunny/clouday - so should be ok. As long as it stays dry.
I think we're all prepared - just need to work out where we are gonna stick 30 A2s - perhaps we'll get a hard standing again. Wooly - have you spoken to the organisers about this?

The guy whose car it was had an equivalent courtesy TT within a couple of days until his was put right.

I have no idea where they are going to stick us AT ADi .They just asked me to confirm how many A2's will be coming as they need to try and fit us all in .
I Would like to think we could have pride of place on the hard stand so other clubs can sit up and take notice ,
Perhaps we may even get more attention in the AD magazine as well ......
I requested more passes as this was going to be are big meet this year , i told them that we where going to go for a new record of 30 A2's....The most A2's ever collected in one place so it would be nice if everyone turns up from digging around i think the record stands at 23 (see pic) this is in Berlin

There was a potato van last year too - as well as the other 'Motor' venue van foods. I have also booked the room at the local pub - so if all else fails, we can get some nosh then.

malcolmmoc, I have been to Castle Combe circuit many times, not only Audi Int. I found found that it is not at all disabled friendly. On one occasion I was told that the disabled toilets were "private", and on another that there were no disabled toilets (there are), and on yet another I was denied a parking space near the action and was made to walk half way round the circuit from where I was directed to park. That knackered me for the rest of the day and I still had to walk back. It's a good day out so don't let that put you off.

Hi,
PS - Whilst I remember - if anyone has a Windows laptop with a USB port that has enough juice in it to survive the day, perhaps they could bring it along. I'll bring my Vag-Com HEX-CAN cable and software, and we can drum up some funds to do checks for other Audi folk. I'm sure Skipton will bring his along too.
(I'd bring one of my own laptops - but none of them have useable batteries any more!)

Yes, I'll be bringing the laptop and a couple of batteries - toying with the idea of an inverter too - Costco have one in for £23 which seems quite good.
By the way, they also have 5litre packs of Wonder Wheels for £8 which is what Halfrauds charge for a litre!

I'll bring my laptop which has a 4hr battery life. But I have the Belkin AC Anywhere. I use it to power my laptop with USB TV tunner for some Video-in-motion action.

Except mine is not 300W, I think it is about 55W but should be enough to charge your laptops. Feel free to borrow it on the day for all your VAG-COM fun (or charging mobiles ...etc)! And while you're at it, perhaps you can afford me a free VAG-COM check up ;-)
That seems like a fair deal humps. Thanks.
It was suggested that we could charge a small amount to run a check / do the locks etc on other peoples' Audis. Perhaps a fiver or something? I'll print something up and we can decide on price tomorrow. I think we will have 3 VagComs between us.

Sorry, we couldn't stay longer but my Bruv was in needs of his meds..
However, while we were there we had a great time. I was so impressed with the huge turnout of A2's - never seen so many at one time. Just a shame we were crammed into the corner - trying to get a decent photo of all the A2 was a nightmare.
Not sure if I was the only one but I was slightly dissapointed with the trade stands.I didn't make it last year but the previous 2 years seemed to have a lot more stalls from memory.
Hope everyone who went on afterwards has a good time.
I'll get some of the better pictures sorted out soon & post them in an appropriate location

Thanks to all involved for an enjoyable day. :) Glad to put faces to names and swop stories in person.
I'll definately second that :-)
On the Grand finale parade I saw at least 2 photographers (one on the trackside and the other in the people carrier) who seemed to be taking pics of all cars. I presume they will be selling prints. Any idea where they will be promoting themselves?
I was a bit apprehensive about the Grand finale parade (likely no insurance cover) but I thought everyone was very well behaved but maybe the track marshalls could have gone a bit faster, seemed to being doing 0 to 20 mph most of the time.
Hey, the drive to the pub afterwards down those country lanes and trying to keep up and not get lost was the more fun ;-)
Once again thanks especially to Ben and Wolley for organising and to Mike (Skipton01) for running the Vag-Com software. Looking forward to seeing the pics on this web site.
Thanks Alan.
It was good to meet you. I'll try and get some more of my photos up after I have caught up with some sleep...
Incidentally, between the donations (thanks to everyone who chipped in) and the competition, we made £109 - which will be put towards the next batch of merchandise.

Having just got back - A BIG THANK YOU to all who made today the best A2OC meeting yet.
It was great to see old faces again and to meet new members. It's only through our shared enthusiasm for the little A2 that the A2OC can exist and be a success.
I'll get some photos and video up as soon as possible, but we can all be very proud of our showing today - we might have the smallest car in the Audi range, but we had by far the biggest turnout of a single model club.
Cheers,
Mike

Excellent day, great to see familiar and new faces. Much info learned, and many dents removed!
Also had an unofficial cruise control convoy along the M4 and M5 with Mike - when he's behind you the Tank can be seen for miles with the HID's and illuminated rings!
A fantastic turn out for a single model club - I'm left wondering whether the numbers will actually be matched tomorrow at the BTCC finale by the SEAT boys.. another early start!

Who all attended Audi Driver International meeting at
Castle Combe i think this is definatly a new record for this
country and possibly a world record for A2's in attendance ....
There where lots of new faces and a few old ones ,we all had one
thing in common ,we all have total admiration for this fantastic car
and wanted to share the joys of owning this modern day classic car.
I think we all deserve a pat on the back as some people travelled half way accross the country to make it to this meet and we where rewarded for this as we had the biggest turnout of any owners club at the event ...
We may have been squeezed into a corner but we had some favourable
comments from other club members on what a great sight it was to see
30 A2's all lined up on our stand as this was situated right by the entrance , and this was the first thing that many people saw on arriving at the event .......
Congragulations to Shezlee,Colin and DriveForward who all won a prize in our competition ..........
Lastly a very big Thank You to Skipton for letting me drive the Big Tank around the track Im sure Mike will agree we had a little Fun Sorry for being a little too enthusiastic (serves you right for calling me wally once) LOL !!!

I can only echo the comments of the previous posts.
It was an extremely enjoyable event which was well organised, (from our A2 perspective), by Ben and Wooly. A big thank you to you both for all your hard work in arranging the competitions and ensuring that we had pride of place inside the venue and sufficient, (just about), allocated parking. For me, the ‘crown’ in this military run organisation was arranging that we arrived in convoy in 'COLOUR' co-ordination – what an idea and what a site – top marks guys!!
To see so many of our little A2’s in one place was amazing and made such a visual impact on those arriving with our prime spot just inside the entrance.
The mist and brisk chill in the air, in no way detracted from the day. It was great to finally put some faces to the names and to share stories and modification information with one another. I can definitely say that I left the event with more friends than I arrived with. (Special thanks to ‘the fin’ and ‘drive forward’!!).
Skipton was his usually helpful self and provided enough hints and tips to us all to justify the journey in itself.
When is the DIY DVD in production Mike?? LOL!!:D (You could make a small fortune and retire!!).
I think a high percentage of us took advantage of the Vag-com ‘health check’ and I would like to say thanks to Ben for taking the time to run the diagnosis on mine and setting up the ‘bleep’ for the alarm system. (I am pleased that we raised some funds for the club in the process!!).
Having been overtaken by Wooly on my way to the event, I had the pleasure of following him and arriving at the car park together. (The new lowering springs certainly make your car look really cool on the move Wooly and give the car a more squat and aggressive stance!!). Special thanks for taking me direct to the car park – LOL!!;)
To conclude, I would like to say, despite having the smallest car, we made an excellent showing by having the biggest turn out of any club. For me, I saw this as one huge A2 meet, which in my opinion was more beneficial and more enjoyable than the ‘ADI’ event itself.
Well done to all who attended and to Ben, Wooly and Skipton once again – here’s looking to 40 plus A2's next year!!
Regards,
Darren
P.S. – The parade laps were awesome; what a site to see us all in convoy – really proud of our little car and our attendance.

Thanks to Ben and Woolly from Peter and myself for organising such a successful meet. Also thanks are due to the many people who took the trouble to attend, often from a long way, it was a real pleasure to meet you.
Apologies for leaving before the end, but Peter was looking colder and colder and we can't afford a chill at this stage of his training (Mr Natural Universe in LA in 4 weeks). He looked so tired on the way home that I took over the driving, M25 closed again due to accident so we had to go the long way round. I went to bed when I got home and slept for 12 hours non stop, a world record for me. I don't think P is up yet! So it was almost certainly a wise decision to leave when we did. Let's hope next year things will be better for us.
I wonder if Audi International and other Audi clubs will take us seriously now.
I am sure that Peter would come even if I couldn't.

Yep, cheers for a greeeat day out everyone, really well organised and brilliant to see that we had one of the best turn outs of the day. As I drove into the paddock (a bit late - sorry) I was quite surprised to see what can only be described as a royal crescent of A2s - fantastic.
It was good to see some familiar faces and some new ones too. Ollie really enjoyed himself (apart from the walk down to Quarry when he wanted a carry!). He was really chuffed with the lunchtime 'parade' round the track and was even more chuffed when the VW camper thingy pulled over to let us go by and get the pedal down. My friend Alan drives an Elise and he was quite impressed with the handling through the two chicanes.
Well, lets hope for more of the same, or even better next year. Look forward to seeing some of you again...

I echo all praise for Ben, Wooly, Skipton and co. Greatly organised event by some great people! Thanks! I had a really enjoyable day. Glad to have taken part in what was possibily a world record for number of A2s gathered.
Great to have done the VAG-COM check, not so happy to find out I have a problem with a climate control temperature sensor. I'm glad other knowledgeable members were around and I think Spike pointed me to the sensor that lies deep inside the dash (I will sure seek more opinions in a different thread!). Certainly a good example of how much you can learn by meeting the members!
I hope we get good coverage on the next issue of Audi magazine and get more exposure so other A2 owners will be aware of this great place! And may be one day we'll have 50+ cars to take part in an exclusive A2 event!
Thanks a lot everyone, it was a pleasure to meet you all!
humps - Skipton mentioned that "00818 - Sensor for Evaporator Outlet Temperature (G263) 30-00 - Open or Short to Plus" error might not necessarily mean a full dash-off. You weren't the only one to get that code during the day. Create that new thread for further info...

Hey, sounds like everyone had a good time! I was so disappointed that we couldn't make it, as we had planned to.
Unfortunately, I spent all of Friday night not sleeping as my foot was extremely painfull. Decided at 5am that walking around Castle Combe all day wasn't really an option and that medical advice on the foot was a better choice. Inflammed membrane round the tendons apparently....

I would like to add my thanks to Ben, Wooly, Mike for organising us and to all the rest of the A2OC for making it a great day.
25 or 30 A2s together who was counting was a sight; at least now we should be counted as a proper Audi by others.
From an A2OC perspective the event was Fantastic, from a spectator it was poor; too few trade stands and the parade laps at the end... well did you see anyone at track side?
I think we should get the photos from the official chap (Jim) he must have all of us.
Anyhow I have add a few photos to the gallery and used all my space must be too big a file size.

First of all the apologies.
Sorry for the late reply to this thread.
Making Maddy's husband spend more cash than originally planned in getting the dents pulled out of this wifes A2.
Not going to the pub afterwards, having not seen my two boys (and my wife) all day I wanted to get home and spend a bit family time with them before they went to bed.
Now the thanks
A BIG thankyou to ALL who turned up to make this the best A2 turnout at ADI ever. 25+ A2's is one in the eye for all other Audi owners clubs to see and now take us seriously.
Meeting the faces behind the forum names and chatting about all things A2 and more.
Ben, WoolyA2 and Skipton01 who all made the day go so well and smoothly. The car now speaks to me when I lock it.
Managed to handout one of the business cards (cheers Ben) the other day, try and keep them with me, so we might some more Hampshire members, must do the one in the car Park !!!!
I have to agree with Shezlee, with the trade stands or lack of them, what was there actually to buy ??
The only think I could see was some cleaning cloths, some back issues of Audi driver Mag and Dave ? sellng NOS stock out the back of his brand new T5 camper with matching trailer.
Why are there not more main dealers there selling there stuff, I am sure one of the local dealers would be able to bring some stuff along.
Perhaps we should email the organisers and tell them about the issues we have, there is a email address on the ADI website. Might just do that after writing all this.
Does anyone know what company had the Blue R32 Golf and Black New Passat Estate on show, I think it was something with West in it as that was signwrittend on the side of the cars.
They both passed me on the A34 southbound, so don't know if they are from this neck of the woods.
Whilst travelling along the M4 the oil light came on, so stopped at Chieveley services and topped her up. Good job I didn't get too over exicted in the parade lap and used even more up.
Just checked the ADI website, the event report will be posted in the December issue of Audi Driver.
Photos are also to follow soon hopefully on there, once Neil Birkett and Co. has uploaded them all.
Once again thanks to all who attended and lets get together again soon if not we will all be back in 2007, this time with the weather being a little better.
I will get my photos of my camera and if there is anything diffferent and interesting will upload to the website.

Hi Widdy
I'm with you and Shezlee regarding the lack of trade stands, having been to GTi International in the past and expecting something similar.
Maybe the A2OC could consider attending this event next year - and show all the other Audi and VW Clubs how it's done (Great job Ben, Wooly & Daughter & Skipton and as he rightly said, everyone else who came along)
For info, WEST Tuning are based at Thruxton circuit (www.west-tuning.com) I don't know much about them other than they occasionally advertise in the Audi Driver magazine

We where invited to GTi International this year at Bruntigphorp but i pulled the plug as there was a severe lack of interest.
If we could get 30 A2's at GTi next year i reckon we would be going there everyear as it makes ADi look like a micky mouse event .....I Will definatly put it back on the calender for next year and we can see if we have renewed interest ,
GTi is also for the whole weekend so there is the possibility of camping as well if anyone was interested .
I especially liked the fact that so many people went for a drink after CC
it was nice to be able to continue are friendship after the meet.
Next Year it has been suggested that we go for the Awards and Dinner
at the Hilton Hotel In Swindon maybe we could get an award for the best stand of the event ........
I reckon that WE have proved that with plenty of forward planning we can do this and we can get the numbers up for an event ,we've proved ourselves in front of the Audi Crowd now let's prove ourselves in front of the GTi crowd .....
ITS VERY NICE TO HAVE BEEN COUNTED .....

I also think we could be considered for best club for the awards next year. There are 2 categories - one for best club in terms of events and the other in terms of communication - I certainly think we're in with a shout at the latter.
Also, I'm going to Stealth Racing in a couple of weeks to have Tanks springs uprated. Very near there (Southam near Coventry) is Baginton Air Museum, with loads of military jets, including one of the last examples of a Vulcan bomber.
How cool would a photo of 20+ A2s look parked in front of that?!
Also, I'll be having a word to see about the possibilites of a rolling road day at Stealth - should be fun and it'll benefit all involved I guess.

Great idea for a meet at Baginton Air Museum. The Vulcan is a fantastic aircraft. It would have still had a role in both Gulf Wars if still flying, according to an ex Vulcan pilot quoted on a documentory watched recently. It takes 3 Jaguars escorted by Tornados to do a similar job!
FYI - I'm off to visit John Gaisford today to see all the photos - I'll report back on what is available.

What part numbers have you ordered, and dare I ask how much they came to?
Thanks,

I had a great day with my dad (hollyrescue) again this year, and another year that I couldn't indulge in biscuits and junk food! As my dad mentioned i'm trainimg for the Natural Mr Universe in L.a on the 8th Nov. I was totally knackered on the day and frozen solid, but hopefully next year will be on the burger and donut diet!
It was great to see so many A2's, superb little cars and you never know I may get one by next year!
Take care
Peter

Hey Peter,
Best of luck in the competition. Let us know how you get on.
Ben.
A picture of Skipton's Tank features in this month's Audi Driver magazine... the article includes:
"The big growth areas this year were the club displays and parade sessions, with the grassed paddock area filled almost to bursting point with nearly 250 club display cars, and both the lunchtime children's parade and grand finale lapping session heavily subscribed. Although not the largest, perhaps the most impressive line-up was from the A2 Owners' Club, who'd pre-arranged a convoy of 30 or so of their cars to the event, arranged neatly into groups by colour!
Quite a number from A2OC also joined in with a convoy around the circuit for the lunchtime children's parade laps..."

Ahhh, fame at last!
Seriously though, it's only justified after the article last month about the A2 from a grandfathers perspective! Without wanting to upset any grandfathers (or grandmothers) the A2 just can't be pigeonholed like this, as we showed at Castle Combe.
Cheers,
Mike

Yes, I'm working on getting my nephew down to ADI this year. Although only 11, he is nearly 6 feet tall and at first glance, would not pass for a young 'un!
Cheers,
Mike
