Hi!
I've you noticed noises inside the dashboard everytime you accelerate or brake?
It looks like two different plastic part rubbing each other...
:-(
Even on the highway (good road, with almost no bumps) I can hear it.
Any tip would be fantastic.
Cheers,
A2day

Same here-I complained of what I thought was a trim rattle and they told me they had isolated some wiring and it is now fixed.
But maybe by them removing the trim that it did fix the rattle.....we will never know!.

Hi,
I don't hear any rattle, mine has a plastic squeek in the middle pillar near the mountpoint of the safetybelt. The mechanics advise was maybe not to have it fixed (it's a minor sound) because the proces of removing the trim from the pillar can cause more rattles and squeeks than fixed.

I had exactly the same noise from the middle pillar in my first A2 and they fixed it no problem.
But, being honest Dennis, don't you think their excuse is a little odd?. Trying to fix it may cause more problems?. Mmmmmmmmmm......excuse not to bother, or did my dealer not care if they caused more noise for me.......I wonder!!!!

Sure, the reply is a bit of a sorry excuse. But my brother is a mechanic too and he assured me that sometimes removing big pieces of trim actually causes more squeeks than that it cures.

Wrap you A2 in plastic then fill with oil-it will cure all squeeks!.
Just don't corner any faster than 5mph or you will slip out of the seat!.
I know what your saying-I also read about some people having dashboards removed to cure one rattle and ending up with 5 more when they got the car back!.

same like a slight buzzing noise from the dash? Which wiring loom ? Do you have air con on yours?
Also rattles/squeeks from rear seat uprights

The rear seat upright noise on my A2 came from the catch where you adjust the rear seat backs into one of two positions. The catch/latch mechanism needed creasing and all has been well since.

Mine has developed a really annoying rattle somewhere between the centre console airvents. If you hold either the grabs handle as it buts upto the centre console or the top left corner of the vents in the centre console it stops the noise but I'm reluctant to take it to the dealer incase they have to remove the dash. I had the dash removed last year due to a replacement condenser for the climate control. The dealer made a bit of a mess of the dash. Had to have both side airvents replaced and the instrument binnicle as they damaged these while removing the dash. They also had to replace the passenger door centre where the electric window switches are as they mangled this with their screwdrivers.

Mine squeaks from somewhere around the passengers seat, cannot for the life of me locate it, unless you have it pulled right forward, or have a passenger in it all the time. Haven't got round to sorting it yet, trying to get some other wiring problems sorted out (I may have caused a TDi Sport recall single handed, sorry guys), I'll get them to sort my squeak out then.

Yes, it's not worth the hassle going around the seat with a can of WD40 as you'll never find the noise. I find that adjusting the backrest slightly stops the noise for a while but ultimately the dealer is best to sort it.
And any wrongly sprayed WD40 can cause havoc with hard cornering......

Hi!
Not only I've got noises on the dashboard, but also on the trunk.
Both trunk covers make lot of low-frequency sound... :-(
Usually I use the top curtain opened, and the folded cover (over the spare tire) folded back (yes the spare tire is visible from the outside...) ..but this is the only way to minimize the noises...
Any idea? How about using some rubber compound on the folded cover?

I had the same problem with the folding floor.
I put some soft stuff (felt, velcro etc) on the last 5cm of the floor support near the rear of the car as this is where the folded floor touches and bumps up and down. Works well.

Hello folks.
I have recently taken delivery of a new A2 1.6 (after returning the last one to the dealer due to an unresolvable creaking from below the gear lever (the engine mounts apparently)). However, this new vehicle has 3 annoying rattles (rather than just the 1 creak). I have the following:
1) Centre console rattle/knocking (going in on Thursday to have the dashboard removed - that wiring loom issue I think).
2) Rear seat upright catch squeak/rattle. When the car was last in for fixing, they said they fixed it - but no luck. I will take the information I have from here and get them to crease the mechanism.
3) Rattle from bonnet release catch.
I am amazed that these problems are so common. The motoring media are constantly telling how well contructed Audi's are. They are obviously driving A8s and such like.
This is a real shame, as the vehicle is such a neat package otherwise, let down by these tiny niggles.

How did thing went on Thursday?

Well - one down - two to go. Apparently they have to order a new 'heater box' in order to resolve the dashboard creaking. Has to be booked in again for an entire week! However - I managed to persuade the service manager to reporgram my central locking for free so that it automatically locks (see thread elsewhere) - so something positive has come out of this whole fiasco.

I'm not sure if I have one of the rattles discussed or another. For the first 10k miles beautiful silence but recently a rattle a bit like diesel clatter has emerged from around the fuse box/bonnet release area as best I can tell. Is this the wiring problem or drn's rattly bonnet catch? Or something new?

To respond to my own query - as an unexpected side effect of having a tuning module fitted, removing and refitting the bonnet has solved the rattle.

Hello again - just to report that my rattly A2 is in having it's 'heater box' replaced this week. Hopefully all will be cured after this.
As an aside - the A2 courtesy car that I am borrowing is significantly more rattly than either of the A2s that I have owned. Perhaps my expectations of how quiet these vehicles should be is simply too high. It makes a mockery of Audi's reputation for build quality. My old 'cheap as chips' Fiat never had any of these noise issues (and I could have purchased 4 of them for the price of one A2)... Rant over.

You must have got the Fiat they built when they arrived on a Monday morning all enthusiatic. Wish mine was as rattle free as yours.
Our A2 is now almost 4 months old and is still rattle free - fingers crossed.

Rob,
Snap. Had the pleasure of owning three Fiats, and all of them started falling to pieces (i.e. rattling) within one year.
The A2 is proving 100 times better!!!

My Fiat 127 Sport was so noisy you couldn't hear any rattles - just your teeth as the suspension was rock hard with 160lbin race springs - in fact my collegue following in an Audi A3 1.8T was truly amazed by it's cornering ability - alas 12 years of love/hate relationship is coiming to an end as it's just been sold on ebay - see:

Back to rattles - the rattly bonnet is back so has anyone come up with a fix? I'm thinking padding the catch area with duck tape then refitting the bonnet. Incidentally my Fiat (500) is 40 years old this year but everything else is so loud rattles are irrelevant!

Well - the Audi garage fixed my bonnet release rattle. They claimed that they adjusted the tension to the bonnet release catch, and lubricated it. I do note that it is rather difficult to open the flap now - you really have to pull the lever hard.
Seems we had different 'bonnet catch' rattles. Mine seems to be from the locating sockets the bonnet slots into, not the under dash release mechanism. I did have the release adjusted though because when my car was new it simply didn't release at all no matter how hard you pull. Now it works but with no clear feeling that it has released and then the flap still needs to be pulled hard to get it open. The duck tape wrapped over the bonnet locking tang that locates into the socket at the top corners of the bonnet has made some improvement but I think it needs some more tweaking!

I had the same problem with an outer corner rattle of the bonnet. I found it to be a loose fitting plastic "cup" that accepts the bonnet locators. These plastic cups are clipped into a similar shaped aluminium cup, but not very well.I packed the plastic cup with a plastic 0.5mm thick shim, and no more rattles. You would'nt believe a small amount of movement of the bonnet corners could make so much noise from the dashboard!!.

regarding the rattles and squeeks from the rear seats i positioned a small rectanglar piece of sponge not just any sponge but the type of sponge that comes with electronic components more rigid.
Placed in the rear seat locking mechanism you will see a rubber strip that has already been built in put sponge in front of rubber strip and then firmly push the seat into the upright and locked position and now you have no rattles since the sponge has taken up the excess play in between the lock and the catch.
sponge does not fall out since it is quite far into the lock which is housed inside the seat.[8D]

Hello again - just thought I'd let you know that after 3 weeks in the dealer's garage - I finally have my A2 back - with *most* of the rattles fixed.
Turned out to be a real fiasco though - wrong parts ordered, alloys damaged whilst at the dealer, etc. Anyway - I just seem to have a couple of mild creaks left (one from the drivers door, and one from the left hand top side of the dashboard - although I think this last one was introduced when the dealer fixed the heater box, as the whole dask had to come out...) Not sure I can face the ordeal of going back to resolve these ones though - so going to see if I can resolve them myself.
I think the problem that my dealer has is that they are overstretching themselves. I was speaking to one of the engineers, and he was saying that he doesn't even get time to eat lunch, as there are so many cars coming in to be repaired - and not enough space or mechanics to fix them. I guess it pays to hunt around for a not-too-busy dealer in future (and perhaps one that is rated by members here).
Incidentally, as a good will gesture, they have offered me my first service for free... what would this normally cost?
Hello again.
This is becoming irritating now. The so-called fixed creaking from the centre console is back again - and both fron doors are creaking now. I am not sure I can face another 2 months of dealer hell in trying to resolve these creaks. Does anyone else out there have a quiet dashboard? Or is it likely that these creaks will disappear over time? Any other suggestions. My *main* reason for buying an Audi was the perceived build quality - and I wanted a creak/squeak free car... and so far the whole experience has been hugely traumatic.
Help.

Hi,
last year my dealer told me to lube all the door locks (the part of the lock that interfaces with the hook mounted on the chassis) as well as the hook itself, with engine oil. Plenty of it. This will cure all squeaks etc which actually often come from places you don't suspect them to. Reason for this was that the door locks dry up and do not allow normal "movement" of the doors while driving, hence transferring this movement to the dash etc. Try it, it helped for me.

My TDI has developed a rattle after 3000 miles, it sounds like a wire touching one of the air vent pipes. Does anyone know how to remove the under dash panel in the footwells? On the drivers side I found 1 screw above the clutch pedal, but when removed I still couldn't free the panel, as it appears to be part of the lower facia.

I suffered rattles in both my 2002 and 2003 A2. The dash one was due to a wiring loom behind the radio/CC panel.
Noises from the driver door post were to do with the seat belt adjuster.
Apart from that I would suggest maybe WD40 or a silicon spray (which garages use to cure creaks between two surfaces anyway) around the problem areas.
You can use cotton wool buds to liberally apply the liquid (spraying causes splash back over you and the car!). It may also be worth wiping the door rubber seals with some of the stuff in case the noises are from there.
