View Full Version : Continuing FSI Problem
Sorry to be a pain but the Mrs's A2 1.6fsi is still not right. The problem is under acceleration in that if you apply constant pressure to the accellerator the car accelerates but not smoothly and surges noticably in a jerky fashion.
I have changed the plugs, oil, oil filter, air filter and MAF and can't seem to improve it. I will try running it on Optimax when the tank is empty, but something is just not right. The only thing left I can think to change ( before taking it to the main dealer with a blank cheque!!! ) is to change the coil packs.
Question is :-
Has anyone had a simmilar occurance
and if coil packs go faulty how do they start behave??
It has only done 28k miles
cheers

My TDi is doing that at the moment. Suspect it's the MAF, but I'll get the dealer to do it in the next couple of months at it's first service.
Coil packs are known to fail on FSI engines, but I'd seek advice from a dealer first and point out what steps you've taken so far.
Cheers,
Mike

I had a coil pack go on mine, the engine management light came on and the engine ran very rough.

The 1,6FSI needs to run on high octane petrol. Tried mine once without and it did not run smoothly.

The symptoms you are describing exactly matches a problem that was relatively common on Honda Insights - a clogged / failing EGR valve (Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve).
However I don't know if Audi FSI engines have an EGR valve (?). One of the tecchies will know.

Yes they do! I am having mine replaced at the moment, to try and fix the problems I am having with my 1.6FSI.
can't you just blank off the EGR to prove the point? How much do you reackon it'll be Redders. Can you let me know how you get on?

The cost of the EGR valve is £300 with an indepandant garage, it is 1.5 hours labour plus the part. I will let you know if it solves my problems!
Cheers redders - what was your problem?

I have just spoken to the garage and they have replaced the valve. The problem I am having is that the engine management light is on with the fault low pressure in the system. No matter what they do they can't clear the fault!! So far the bill is at £815 but that probably only covers a third of the actual time they have spent on it!!
They are trying to get hold of some modified software as a last resort in trying to get the system to reset!!
I am getting to the stage now where I don't know wherer to go next!!
Have filled up with Optimax and can't believe the difference. it's a completely different car.. Shall not be using ordinary UL again in it. and problem seems to have disappeared now smooth through accelleration.

Thanks for all you help guys

Same experience as me, it's amazing what the difference is. You can always "top up" with ordinary unleaded from time to time just make sure that the average octane is high enough to avoid the misfiring.

With the dealer VAS system they can actually reflash the ECU and clear all codes, although many dealers don't know the full functionality of the VAS system unfortunately

Hi ! My 1.6 FSI's Engine Management light came on yesterday - I just bought the car last week (privately - 03 Reg 15k Miles) and put normal unleaded in. The car was not that smooth and I was told by a local VW Audi Independant to use the higher octance which I have done. The car runs smoothly now except for a need for a wheel balance which I will do in the next few days. Is this normal? and will it be a simple reset of the management light job? or could there be something more sinister going on? I read about coils - but car seems to run very smoothly to me! Please help! Thanks Mike
Give at least two tanks full of optimax before panicing - get the fault codes read and come back

Im in a similar position to you Romseymike. Picked up my FSI last week, filled up with Shell V-Power and 2 days later the engine management warning light has come on. Car was driving ok prior to V-Power, seems slightly more responsive now, but with the orange glow of a warning light now in my face! I was hoping that it was a simple problem relating to the higher octane fuel.

I have a diesel so don't have any first hand experience of FSi management warning light problems but the attached thread may be of interest
