This picture was taken in a pit looking forwards from under the back axle. The mysterious ribbed panel is made of white metal and is approximately under the driver's seat. Might be a TDi only item?

No, the oil cooler is connected to the water coolant system.
I guess it's the fuel cooler.

Andrew Simmons here!!
Hello i think what you are looking at is on diesel models only, is the fuel pre-heater.
Since diesel needs to be heated up before being injected directly into the cylinders this is somthing used rather than glow pugs and is located there since the pre-heater needs to have cooling air flow to cool it down but it also requires protection from any collisions from anything on the road, thus why it is located out the way and fairly well up into the hollow space frame.
This by the way is only my assumption since i too have noticed the unit under my A2 1.4 tdi but can't see any other pre heating devices on the car.
Thanks
Andy simmons.

Hi,
The item in question is a FUEL cooler, this is due to the very high pressure in the fuel lines. this unit is fitted after the fuel manafold and prior to the fuel being returned to the fuel tank.
And yes it is only fitted to the TDI..

Not really with the "PD" injection system. Fuel will be as hot as the engine, no matter if you heat it up or not. If at all, the only fuel heating system is built into the diesel filter and operates below ~0 °C.
It's rather the opposite - after coming back from the injectors (and the throughput is very high), fuel will be way too hot for the plastic tank. That's what the cooler is for.

Not in the back of the car, rather near the engine. ;)
