Hi,
I thought I'd start this thread for VAG-COM people to indicate what kind of interface they have, where they are located, and if they are able to help others with diagnostics/programming. I'll keep this top post updated with details:

Excuse my ignorance, but what exactly is VAG-COM? Hopefully I'm not the only one who doesn't know!

VAG-COM is an aftermarket diagnostic tool, which does the same (and more) as Audis own tools, VAS5051/2 and VAG1551/2 (these are their computers which they attach to your car during routine and non-routing service and help them with diagnosis and recoding of the vehicle).
The user base for VAG-COM is huge world-wide and the software is very mature indeed, with great back-up service from the authors themselves.
It is only via a VAG-COM unit that a proper servicing of the car can take place, as otherwise, you can't reset the service indicators (unless for fixed intervals) and it is invaluable in carrying out all kinds of other repair/servicing/diagnostic work.
Hope this helps,
Mike

Do the cheap leads on ebay work as I was thinking of getting one to find out why my engine management light is on again! If so what one do I need as there seem to be hundreds!!!

The cheap Ebay interfaces are an absolute minefield - some work, some don't others only work with certain versions of the software (which they never bundle and is like rocking horse sh1t to source!).
Best advice is be careful and only buy one if you can afford to lose £30 or so on something that may well not do what you want it to.

Mike

Hi Redders
Sorry to plug Gendan again but they do a full range of interface cables. Give them a call as they will be able to explain the merits and drawbacks of each type - much less risk than buying off e.bay..........see link

Thanks for you help guys, I think I will go for this one a bit more expensive than ebay but less risk!
http://www.gendan.co.uk/product_VAGUSB.html
Does anyone have the software available to use these connectors?
I have a laptop with USB and would welcome being able to check out the car myself.
There does seem to be quite a bit of different software around and even more different leads, so I am a bit confused about which is "best".
So what specific reccomendations would people make?
I could spend £80 - £150 for the right lead/software combination, but would like to be able to do MPG, emmisions, logging, and service light resets and fault codes.
If the thing also allowed me to reset the service light on my volvo V40 then that would be a bonus?
So come on...educate me!

Hi chb
You can download free VagCom software from the manufacturers, Ross Tech.
http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/download/archives.html.
The cheaper 'copy' leads usually work with the older versions of the software so you usually don't have access to all the features of the more expensive genuine product.
Check out the gendan web site from the link in Redders mail.
Don't expect to check mpg or emissions with any of these leads.
You will also need the Audi shop manual discs to for module recoding procedures and to make sense of the fault codes.
I don't think any members have used the low cost leads so you will have to do your own research and educate us!! - a call to Gendan may be a good starting point

I recently bought a lead of ebay - £16 from Hong Kong I think.
I have tried it with a couple of software versions (4 and 3) and had reasonable success with it. The major downside is that although it reads modules such as the radio, aircon etc. it won't communicate for the engine codes. As I also own a B5 Passat, I've tried it on that and it communicates with the engine no problem.
Doing some research on the web, I believe this may be because I have a usb lead which may not handle the transmission speeds as well as a serial lead (I think there is software in the link which turns the usb into a virtual serial port...or something like that:) )
So...partial success with a cheap usb lead. At least I found out straight away that I had a front speaker out, so I'm impressed by the diagnostic process as a whole. I'd be interested to know if anyone has tried a similar lead but with a serial plug - at least my laptop has a serial connection as well, so I may consider buying one.

Spike,
Thanks for this - The lead came with a software disk, which I used to provide the drivers. The lead has an FTDI chipset, and uses drivers that can be found on the FTDI website (Works only with Vagcom Ver 3xx or 4xx). I will have a go with the software on Ross tech, and advise if it makes a difference.
If anyone is interested, this is where the lead came from:
http://stores.ebay.com.cn/automobileworkshop
Delivery was only a couple of days from HK.
It would be good to get this lead to read all the modules, even if it won't allow some of the more exotic functions (which I don't personally need). I had the ecu light on for a day a couple of weeks ago, and I'd like to know what it meant.

I bought a cheap one from ebay (Germany) runs release 409-1 and is very useful for diagnosing the old smoker (our A6Q) and clearing the fault codes. Not bad for £20ish and the free software. Mine works as a serial emulator using the USB port. Its fine but I think I'll upgrade to the full monty to communicate properly with everything.

Following up my older posts regarding a cheap Ebay lead, I have now got this to work with regard to reading the engine fault codes as well. I just set the initial baud rate to 9600 and it worked a treat.

Hi Daz C
Check out the Gendan web site. They are helpful and have leads in all price ranges, up to the official VagCom kit. Most will read and clear fault codes but I think only the genuine VagCom ones will allow recoding of modules etc. Also be aware that some of the cheaper ones will not fit the very tight diagnostic socket on the A2

Any body tryed this cable:
http://www.skpang.co.uk/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=21&products_id=33
Does it do the same as the £250 cable?
Skipton01
15-02-2007, 08:49 PM
It is nowhere near as capable as the full version of the cable - it runs the 4.09 version of the software only, which can read most things, but cannot change much, if anything of importance.

Just purchased the poor mans VAG-USB cable from Gendan and after a quick fiddle with the com port settings on my laptop everything in the gardens rosy ..excellent service from Gendan by the way. Now - anybody else got one of these as we need to swap tales on what they actually can and can't do - does'nt seem to like the auto scan function on release 409.1 but manages the individual options - not tried it 'live' so to speak with the motor running as yet. Also found the culprit responsible for setting off the alarm the other day - passenger door code - so after all the "but it was'nt me Dad" - caught red handed !
PS - Could anybody point me in the right direction for the service DVD/CD's I've seen mentioned elsewhere on the forum

Hi all,
Just thought i'd add myself to the list as well.
I've just purchased also the 'poor man's' version of VAG- COM 409.1 USB Interface cable etc from Gendan for £39.95.
Must also echo whats been said before about the chaps at Gendan, - very helpfull !!!
Being a non technical computer type of chap, I ran into problems straight away when installing the cable driver etc. A call to Gendan , and a complete run through with every thing, got me up and running. Same again when I tested the software etc on the A2.
Looking forward to spending more time with it plugged into the car.
Knowing my luck probably blow all the electrics !!!
But don't let that put any one off in the Sheffield area wanting a quick scan.
Cheers Bob.

Can anyone tell me what the difference is between the 409 shareware version of the VAG-COM software and full version? Is it worth the $99 upgrade price?
spike
18-01-2008, 11:31 PM
Hi dilbert
As far as I know you can't use any shareware above version 409 with a non genuine Vag Com interface lead. Buy the genuine article (around £150 to £250 depending on the model) from the UK distributor, Gendan and the software upgrades are free for life. Check the attached link for info on the differences between v409 and the latest version.

Hiya folks.
The A2's engine management light came on on friday.
Car sounds and drives OK, though I had noticed about a 5% loss in MPG for the last few weeks, but assumed this was due to weather and driving conditions.
So anyone in Leeds got a fault code reader that I can hook up to please in exchange for beer?
Alternatively, whats the best sub-£50 solution to read these myself.
Ta!

Thanks for the offer of a checkout, but didn't fancy driving the car over the pennines with a potential engine fault.
I bought and OBD interface from ebay. Works a treat and gave me this:
17748 - Camshaft Position Sensor (G40) / Engine Speed Sensor (G28): Incor. Correlation
P1340 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
17440 - Shareware Version. To Decode all DTCs
P1032 - 35-00 - Please Register/Activate
17446 - Shareware Version. To Decode all DTCs
P1038 - 35-00 - Please Register/Activate
Can anyone help with the two none-explained codes?
Just need to get the full version of vag-com now and I will be able to help all in Leeds. Thanks
Skipton01
22-01-2008, 09:12 PM
Hmmmm, interesting one that.
The two codes don't appear in the Ross Tech fault table:
http://wiki.ross-tech.com/index.php?title=Category:Fault_Codes&until=16491%2FP0107
I'll have a squizz at the manuals, but otherwise, a scan with a full version of the interface and software is probably the best way forward.

Thanks, Spike.
However, can anybody explain why HEX-USB+CAN is $349 (~£175) direct from Ross-Tech in the States and £259 from Gendan? This looks like the same pricing structure that we're used to from Bill Gates and buddies. Is there any difference between the US version and the UK version? It doesn't look like it as the Gendan site just refers you to the American site for support.

When you add on sales tax and take off VAT, the prices aren't that far apart. I know what you're saying, but it's not on a par with Mr Gates' past efforts!
Cheers,
Mike
spike
28-01-2008, 11:29 PM
Hi dilbert
Ross-Tech charge $35 for shipping to the UK so as Mike says, by the time you add this and vat (and probably don't get quite the exchange rate you expected) then you'r saving about £30. Now if things go wrong and the parcel gets damaged in transit or the lead needs fixing in warranty (you pay to return it to the States) then its maybe not such a good deal.
However you buy, its a great piece of kit.

hi guys, trip to audi at the weekend gave me 4 fault codes
01304 - no radio communication - obviously because as i have an aftermarket headunit i assume
01179 incorrect key programming - because one of my keys has packed up im assuming
16955 - cruise/brake switch (A) circ malfunction - i assume this was because my 2 rear brakelights bulbs were blown? have replaced them now and glow plug light no longer flashing
17978 - engine control module (ECM) disabed sporadic - no clue what this is? any ideas?
cheers guys
edit: found that its engine start blocked by immob. which i assume is cos this key is faulty and wont start the car. they also couldnt fix the key and told me i need the new immob. end of it. fun times.

In response to a recent request, I've decided to start this thread to list all A2OC members who have diagnostic readers, whether hand-held stand-alone units or full blown VAG-COM systems.
So, it you have a system, please add yourself to this thread and we'll get a sticky drawn up for future reference.
It also goes without saying, that owners should keep their status updated, if they sell or otherwise are unable to perform scans.

Hi,
I've updated the Googlemap feature to show VAG-COM members. To get yours to show on the map do the following:
1) Make sure you have joined the group 'VAG-COM Members':
- Select User CP in top menu
- Select Group Memberships underneath Miscellaneous section
- Check Join Group against VAG-COM Mebers and submit
2) Edit your entry on the Googlemap:
- Select Googlemap ME in top menu
- Click on [Your Entry]
- Check settings are correct
- Click on 'Update the information'
Note that I've already completed Step 1 for those that have indicated they have a VAG-COM of some kind.

I can't understand why we have two sticky threads with the same purpose. See the other sticky above this one: http://www.a2oc.net/forum/showthread.php?t=6897
Although this one started out as a list of VAG-COM owners it has strayed from that into general questions about VAG-COM.
Could I suggest rationalisation?

The Rosstech software works under XP running on Bootcamp on intel macs. Not sure if it'll work with VMWare Fusion though. It won't work natively as their USB driver is Windows only.

My experience is that VAG-COM was not reliable in XP under VMWare Fusion or Parallels Desktop of my MacBook Pro. The session just drops out.
It does work ok (as Ben points out) when XP is booted natively with Boot Camp.
Haven't tried it with the absolute latest versions of VMWare fusion.

i noticed something that looked like it might be oil in a couple of the coil packs... the others where dry... does this mean anything?
any one nearby that can plug into our A2 and see if it really is the coil packs?
