I've noticed that when ive been driving for like 10 miles the car temp gauge should be on half or 90c but this has been going down to 70c
and when i restart the car the temperature usually climbs back to half

anyone know why this happens? like the temp is at normal operating and then it drops

A2's have a problem with the temperature sender units.

Hi Adrenaline, mikey1 is correct.
A couple of Club members (including me) have had problems with the coolant temp sender unit. In my case the temp gauge behaved as normal from cold but after reaching 90c it would suddenly drop to 70, then go back up to 90. Initially I assumed it was a sticking thermostat but changing this made no difference. A new sender unit cured the problem.

how much does a new sender unit cost?

The coolant temp sender unit (p/n 059 919 501 A) for my 2001 TDi cost £22 + vat.
