Cost for Having DIS?

I don't think any of our club members have retro-fitted DIS but as a starting point, a new instrument panel with DIS is likely to be around £300 - 350. Add £100 for bits and pieces and fitting to get a ballpark price. If this has not put you off, get an accurate price for the instrument panel from your Audi Dealer then let us know.

Cheers Spike

Sorry I've not been around for a while - the big C and the wife you see!

Anyway, I've already sent a PM on this subject to another member, but basically, you're looking at a financially non-viable job.

The non-DIS instruments are £256+VAT, so add on another £75 or so for DIS, then budget for new sensors (washer bottle, oil level, bulb check etc) plus new wiring to the engine ECU (for fuel economy etc) and a lot of labour time and you'll be lucky to get change from £1200-1500.

If you have a pre-CAN bus car, then you'll be in a world of pain, as most of the sensors rely on the bus to transmit data.

Sorry to be so negative, but I wouldn't entertain the idea - and as some of you may know, I've done virtually everything there is to do on an A2.

Cheers,

Mike

Thats wrong. The AUDI A2 has always the CAN bus. Also cars from 2001 have it, but that radio is not connected with it.
From 2002 on the radio is connected with the comfort bus. On cars with DIS the radio is connected with the infotainment bus. The Infotainment bus is on the grey plug.

To retrofit the DIS, you have to buy a instrument panel with DIS, the 32pin grey plug, the "Lenkstockschalter" (how this is called in English???) with DIS whip and some meters of 1mm² wire.
The signals for fuel economy, doors and so on are already there. Thanks to CAN-BUS Comfort and Engine.
The re-equipment on washwater- and bulbcontrol is too complicated. Simply put the pins 14, 15 and 16 at the grey plug on mass and its disabled.
At cars from 2002 on, you have to cut the Radio from CAN-comfort and connect it with the CAN infotainment.

Here you can find a list with all DIS panels:

The panels with mph scale are for people who drive on the wrong side of the streets. ;)

Well, I may (or may not) be incorrect about CAN and pre-2001 cars, but I still stand by my ballpark figure for the installation of DIS and if A2TDI seems to think that the installation of a bulb check unit and washer levels is too complex, then I'm surprised that the rest of it is so seemingly straight forward!

If you do decide to go ahead, then best of luck to you - you'll need it!

Cheers,

Mike

Only problem with this option is that the speedo will be calibrated in kph and not mph (which presumably you need in Halifax!).

Cheers,

Mike

It was to give an indication of 2nd hand prices for the speedo, and the source might be usefull for other (non kph/ mph related) A2 parts.

I wouldn't mind having DIS without washwater- and bulbcontrol instead of having no DIS at all.

Actually, not having a 'washwater' warning is one of the things that annoys me most about the A2 without DIS! Even my 1983 Escort had one! So cheese-paring.....

Jorgen, that's why I said the ONLY problem was kph instead of mph - I agree with you that sourcing spares from mainland Europe is on the whole a very cost effective way of getting them.

Cheers,

Mike

I made a connection diagram for you. I already retrofitted DIS at three A2's. 1x with washwater and bulbcontrol, 2x without.

Without it's very easy. The only problem is the millage adjustment. Only a new Tacho with max. 100km can be adapted.

If you buy one, which has less miles as your a2, you can use a Square wave generator to correct this.

To retrofit the washwater control, you have to make a hole into the tank and put the sensor in. The hole is already marked on the tank. You see it, if you removes the cover of the left foglight.
But you habe to remove the frontbumper an the wheelhousing. With air conditioning system also the hydraulic pump or the dryer must be removed.

woah £1200 its well not worth it...i wouldnt even pay £200, i once hired an A4 convertible 1.8T and the DIS on that was pretty inaccurate

great car though
