Audi A2 Emissions Light

I have recently bought an 02 registered A2 and have just noticed that the emissions light has come on on the dash..........when I called an engineer about this, I was told that the 1.4 petrols were notorious for having problems with emissions........I had done a bit of research into buying one and hadn't come across this view - could you advise please?

My light is still on from that original post!! I think I would now be worried if it wasn't on!!
