Many of you might not remember but we have got a Travel Bug which is travelling up and down the country as we speak .....
The focus of our Competition this year at Castle Combe involved questions
relating to "ARTHUR" our TB ...I Had a bit of a tough time trying to explain to a few people what "ARTHUR" is and how he gets around in the world of Geocaching .....

What is Geocaching ?
Geocaching is an entertaining adventure game for gps users. Participating in a cache hunt,it is a good way to take advantage of the many features of a handheld gps unit. The basic idea is people hide caches all over the world and share the locations of these caches on the internet. GPS users can then use the location coordinates to find the caches. Once found, a cache may provide the visitor with a wide variety of rewards. All the visitor is asked to do is if they take something they should try to leave something for the cache.

A cache is generally a tupperware or ammo box full of bits and pieces but are generally hidden somewhere of interest or generally somewhere scenic which is nice for a walk hidden out of eyes view ,
that is where the GPS comes in ....

What is a Travel Bug
A Travel Bug is a trackable item that moves from place to place, picking up stories along the way.It has a small metal tag on it with a number on it which when found or transfered to another cache is logged on www.geocaching.com
My daughter currently has a bug which has gone 13,000 miles .......

"ARTHUR" got his name earlier this year when we had a Poll on the a2oc website and "ARTHUR" was the name that won the Poll......http://www.a2oc.net/forum/showthread.php?t=3669&highlight=geocaching

Hi Wooly

May I mention another Geo pastime that could be combined with Geocaching [two for the price of one, so to speak ;-) ] It's Geographing http://www.geograph.org.uk/

The objective is to photograph every square kilometer square shown on the Ordance Survey maps. Like Geocashing, the aim is to get people out and about and see new places. It will also create a snapshot of Britain in early 21C.

So far 55% of the country is cover. Whilst there is a point for uploading the first pic in a square, many people also upload multiple pics to give a more representative coverage. And many spend time writing up background notes. Plus there is a very active forum.

As time progresses the urban areas are reaching 100% but there's plenty of countryside still left. All images are submitted under a Creative Commons Licence.

P.S. Spot the A2 http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/212408
