View Full Version : Rolling Road/Air Museum/Curry Meet

Hi everyone,

Just to judge numbers, how many people would be interested in attending a Sunday meet in the Coventry area, which would include a rolling-road test (for those that want to), a few hours looking around a local air museum ( http://www.midlandairmuseum.co.uk/ ) and a slap up meal at a highly recommended local restaurant.

Robin, one of our Midlands members will be making enquiries as to the possibilities of a group photo around one of the last examples of an Avro Vulcan bomber, which would be a great backdrop and a really eye-catching sight.

We would drive, convoy-style, from the Rollong Road session to Baginton Airport, nearby.

The rolling road session would be held at Stealth Racing in Southam ( http://www.stealthracing.co.uk/ ). The meal would be at either an Indian or Chinese restaurant, whicheve people prefer.

So please, let me (and Robin) know about potential numbers.

Cheers,

Mike

Hi Mike,

This sounds like a great idea to me!!:)

I for one am really interested and will be keen to attend. The 'rolling road' session together with another club 'get together' so soon after Castle Combe is spot on in terms of increasing our number of annual social events!

I am sure, given the 'ADI' turn out and the central location, that there will be alot of interest from other members too!!

Just name the date!!;)

Regards

Darren

P.S. Well done for organising this one Mike!!

Cheers for your interest Darren - it's early doors yet, but I think a viable date would be mid-November. Much later and we're into the whole Xmas thing and I don't think we could organise it for much earlier.

Cheers,

Mike

I echo what Darren said :)

Sounds like a great idea for a nicely varied day, I'd be up for it - when did you have in mind?

Indian would be my choice :p

EDIT: Mike posted whilst I was posting... Mid November would be out for me as I'm on holiday after the first week until the 20th :(

Hi,

Good work. Consider yourself the new Northern Social Secretary.

I'm attending... but can we do the curry please? I turn into a pumpkin if I eat any MSG!

I'll send out an e-mail to the list later to drum up numbers.

Do you know what, I pass there about 20 times a year and I had no idea Coventry International (snigger...portakabin in a field) was there!

For anyone coming up from the South East there is the opportunity to enjoy the finest bit of motorway in the country, the M45. It's only 10 miles long but it's slightly downhill all the way and boy, is it empty.

Watch out for the scamera's on the A45 for those coming from the West - they are everywhere!

ianjohnsonws14

ULP - I spent two years with Marconi in Coventry and during the induction was briefed about the air crash procedure. A coleague suggested that this was OTT however we were then told that there had been two airplane crashes within 1/2 mile of the building in the last 18 months - one a commercial transport aircraft.

A good place to watch fron is from the retail park car park on the A45/A46 roundabout (Tollbar End) since it is higher than the runway, on the flight path and close to the end of the runway - they are still very low!

Just before I left Marconi used to run a charter flight from there to Italy and back each day.

One of the things that i really enjoyed about Castle Combe was after the event had finished We then had a convoy style drive to Colerne to Bens Local and it was very nice to be able to sit down and have a chat , as well as a pint with fellow A2 enthusiast's in past years people have tended to leave as they obviously have a long way to drive home .......

So as well as the Rolling road which may not suit everyone ,there is the excellent looking Air Museum the good thing about this event is that it is fairly central to the country and perhaps not so far to drive home ,It could also be an excellent Photo opportunity for the club ,maybe some pics in front of the Avro Vulcan which will look great in your photo collection.....

We could all once again meet up have a curry and exchange banter have a pint or two and all wax lyrical about our cars ........

Looking Forward To Seeing Everyone Again .....

As per my early interest - count me in!!

It will be great to meet up again so soon after Castle Combe and to pick up where we left off after that excellent event.

Curry, curry, curry - wins every time for me!!:p

Looking forward to the day already - 'rolling road', (for those who want it), aircraft and museum, food, excellent company and a huge number of A2's in one place - who could ask for anything more??:D (I can feel a song coming on...)

Cheers,

Darren

The ruling is that I have to stay in and either get on with the landscaping (if dry) or the hall re-decoration (if wet) so won't make it. Oddly enough I am allowed a weekend off to take her to London/Bluewater to go shopping!

There is also the reconstructed Roman Fort at Lunt just north of the airport.

Don't know any curry houses in Coventry but the Wing Wah does an "eat as much as you want" Chinese buffet with some Indian dishes and in on the A45(http://www.streetmap.co.uk/newmap.srf?x=430060&y=278679&z=0&sv=CV4+9EL&st=2&pc=CV4+9EL&mapp=newmap.srf&searchp=newsearch.srf) and the Mill/Old Mill (?) used to do very good english food (6 years since I was there) and is in Baggington (http://www.streetmap.co.uk/newmap.srf?x=433925&y=275255&z=3&sv=433925,275255&st=4&ar=Y&dn=802)

Do you know how long it takes for a car on the rolling road as I'm still interested but flying back from Tenerife in the early hours of that morning might dictate what time I could make it.

Right then, a quick update on the forthcoming social:

As most of you will know, the rolling road section has had to be postponed, but the guided tour around the air museum and group photo with the Vulcan bomber, as well as the curry is all still on.

We will assemble at 11.30, on the road outside Coventry Airport, then take it from there.

I will post a map and further details when I have them.

Just wanted to say what a great day we had yesterday, and it was a brilliant chance to put some names to faces.

Brilliantly, the curry made our home almost uninhabitable last night and I bet everyone in the gym was chuffed this morning as I sweated away on the running machine :D

Despite the cold weather, (there I go again, eh Mike!!;) ), it was a very interesting afternoon and a thoroughly enjoyable day!!

Well done to Mike & Robin once again for the organisation.

Looking forward to a repeat of the curry, (not in that sense), though I might give 'Vulcan Nann' a miss next time - eyes bigger than belly and all that!!

I know that a couple of texts have arrived on my phone, congratulating Robin and myself for organising the day and the curry, but please, congratulate yourselves all for turning out and helping to make the day the success that it was.

I'm sure that this won't be the last A2O3C social, either a Car Museum or Bike Museum trip will be organised for early spring next year, and then possibly a camping trip (yes, really!) for the early summer.

I trust that everyone arrived home safely, probably stuffed (like Ang and I were!) and that you all found the day as enjoyable as I did (which is very).

Best wishes to Carl and his brother in law - hope you can make it to the next one.

Cheers guys and gals (and little one too - she was so placid all day),

What a day, absolutely brilliant I can now put faces to names but still haven't a clue apart form a few who they are on the site! Thanks to Mike & Robin for the organisation, I was surprised at the age range of the A2 enthusiasts! I didn't know what to expect really but was pleased to see that this little car Audi don't seem to like has a good group of enthusiatic owners, as most of you will know I'm shortly to depart ownership of 'eggbert' but I'll admit it will now be with quite a lot of regret, you see I took the cross country route back to Cheshire, boy what fun I had!!! I'm still grinning today, Robin if you do go for 'eggbert' I'm sure you wont regret it, he don't half shift on those country roads!! I'll admit I actually saw a single figure fuel consumption readout at one stage, oh and had another argument with the satnav, bl**dy woman, though she knew a better way home!

:D Just want to add my thanks to Robin and Mike for a great day out on Sunday.

Very much enjoyed the Museum and then the Curry.

It was nice touch parking the cars under the mighty Vulcan. Many thanks to the Museum for letting us do this.

Also well done Darren for "fixing" the weather for us!!!! ;) Had a Anticyclone in the car on the way home Darren! No sure if it was the weather, curry or both.

Look forward to the next "Night of The Long Nanns"

Thanks to all for a great day out. The museum was a great idea.

The last meeting cost me £100 and odd quid - for heated mirror glasses, front and rear stowage "upgrades". This one is set to cost me more ...

I'd already agreed to by the Bluetooth adapter of Skipton on the day ....

I'm very grateful that skipton01 has lowered his car - I have always thought that is just what it needed. ... £300.

And, now I have the Bluetooth adapter, the RNS-E/dash upgrade has to happen. ... £nnn

So,
awesome planes,
nice pint of Marstons pedigree (don't get that where I live)
a mountain of popadums (a lot of us skipped lunch)
and a fab chicken madras!

Thanks all for getting together. Will be tricky to beat Sunday for a follow-on event, but I'll be there!

Now, Driveforward, now about those springs ...

Just a thought ...

The sight of those A2s underneath the Vulcan, ( http://www.a2oc.net/gallery/showimage.php?i=813&c=50 ) put me in mind of a Thunderbirds episode, where small wheeled vehicles drive down the runway and let the giant "Fireflash" aircraft land on them - they act as the undercarriage.

Mentioned it to a friend and he sent me a link ....

Apologies to non-Thunderbirds addicts ...

We should set this up for the next track day!

It is dangerous - my list starts with new Phillips bulbs, heated mirrors and then moves onto a remap. I have the approval of my own accountant (and social secretary) on the first two but the last seems to be more of a challenge...

Doh!

The Castle Coombe meet made me buy the bodykit, bulbs and the heated mirrors (still not here  ).. I'm now definite for remap and tints and very tempted by suspension - just a little worried about the rears given my wheels are 1/2" wider and it's close enough on Mikes already!

Fantastic news, it's great to hear stuff like this, when something is rescued from simply 'rusting away' and put back where it was meant to be for future generations to see and appreciate.
