I recently purchased my a2 from a used car dealer last week and have a few problems. The car is going back today to get all problems fixed there are a few and just wondered if anybody else came across these problems with there a2.
*A slight banging noise when going over bumps and holes in the road seems like its coming from under the passenger side wheel arch could possibly be suspension just dont know.
*It takes a bit of a struggle to get it into reverse sometimes even with clutch pressed right in.
*this is the funny one i have recognised it and so has my girl friend i thought i was hearing things.Just when your driving alongyou will hear a hum for a few seconds then it goes away.It sometimes happens when your changing down and up and sometimes just when driving along its really annoying.
My car is a 1.4 tdi 75bhp 52 2003 any help will be much appriecated thanks in advance.:)

They sound familiar - and I am sure you will get expert advice on here. The suspension sounds like the linkage joint. This is a common fault and is an easy DIY fix - from memory the part costs less than £20. But as you have just bought it point the dealer in the right direction.
Don't know about the gearbox as I have never had a problem - always found it very smooth.
The 'hum' noise - does it sound like a cow mooing? A weird analogy but if it does then it is the EGR - exhaust gas recirculation valve. This is common on some and I think difficult to get rid of. You might have to accept it as a feature.
Do a search on suspension linkage and EGR on this forum and you will find lots of explanations. In fact I think there is a guide to self fixing the suspension.
Above all enjoy - the A2 is the best small car and without doubt a future classic.
Hi Adam
I suspect gearbox qaulity varies from A2 - A2; mine can be quite Obstinate and I don't think the action is smooth - I also sometimes can't get reverse first time so need to put the car in neutral, lift off the clutch and then try again - its not that uncommon on many cars to be honest and I just think it's the flywheel sticking a little; it always goes in 2nd time (said the vicar to the nun...).
However, I have driven Darren C's A2 and the gearbox is a totally different beast, like a knife through butter and very smooth and light. Mine isn't getting worse, which would indicate a mechanical problem, so I just put it down to being a bit difficult.
As Foghorn said, if the noise is a 'Mooooing' under acceleration at certain points in the rev range that indicates an EGR fault.
Oh yes, I'd agree the A2 is the best small car out there.

I had a similar problem with mine, poor stiff changes, didn't realise anythinh wrong until I had a loan car with a far better change, told the stealer and they agreed and changed the cables, now a lot better, could just be something like that, if still under warranty tell the stealer!!

Hi Adam
The guys have given you most of the answers but worn anti rollbar bushes are another common cause of front suspension noises. If you have not already found the links, the following may be useful
