Hi, I am a recent owner of a 1,4 petrol SE, 2001 model.

Car is superb, but I have a slight concern. On starting the ignition there is a momentary rough whining sound. Any ideas as to what this might be or indicate?

Welcome to A2 ownership Grafico, and welcome to the A2OC :)

I'll put money on it being the starter motor sticking, which can be sorted one of two ways:

1) Liberal abuse with a wooden mallet

or if that doesn't fix it...

2) Replacement

Not sure how much they are but I can't imagine it being more than £200 (although being an Audi...)

Hi grafico63, welcome to the A2oc.
The noise could be caused by a sticky starter pinion which does not disengage immediately the key is backed off when engine fires up. If this is the problem, ususally a good clean and lube of the engagement mechanism and pinion shaft will cure it

Cheers Spike

Thanks Spike

Not being particularly mechanically-minded, is this a straightforward procedure for me to attempt?

Hi Adrian
I have had plenty of starters in bits but never an A2 unit. As you'r not particularly mechanically minded then if you can just remove the starter and giver it a good clean, take it to an auto-electrician for the check-over. Before doing anything, drive the car there first and get a second opinion. If you decide to go ahead, have your radio code handy then disconnect the battery negative terminal before starting work.

Cheers Spike

Thanks for advice - How much would I need to spend to replace starter motor?

well I have the same problem on mine, and I took it in for servicing at Audi, they looked at this for me. They suspect a starter motor needs replacing, and if that doesn't solve it, it's a part called the flywheel. They quoted me £380 to replace the starter ..
