I've had my A2 for just over 4 months now - a 54 plate 1.6 FSi Sport. I love the car but all of a sudden it's starting to cause me grief. In the last fortnight I've had problems with the engine coolant light on the DIS (Appears at start up when outside temp is low). Took the bonnet off to check the coolant level and it's fine.

Then a couple of days later I noticed a large crack in the windscreen, slightly to the passenger side of the wiper base. It appears that it's started at the very base of the windscreen and is working it's way up at an alarming rate.

To the best of my knowledge nothing has hit the windscreen while I've been driving (I'd like to think I'd notice). There's been no frost or ice at all recently and i'm at a complete loss as to what's caused it. Has anyone else had a similar problem? The car is still under warranty but will the windscreen be covered? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I'm in the process of moving house and I could really do without the cost right now.

I have a crack at the bottom of my windscreen on the driver's side.

It is difficult to notice so I presume I bought it from the previous owner without realising it was there. I would say the previous owner didn't realise either as he seemed very honest.

As I understand it, it can be replaced for free under most fully comp insurance policies without damaging the no claims bonus.

I can't be bothered getting it replaced though as it has not got to the clear part of the windscreen yet.

I had my windscreen replaced in summer, after a small stone hit the mirror mount, causing an instant spider-web, about a foot in diameter.

It was £60, through Direct Line and didn't affect the NCB.

If you have any form of crack, get it looked at sooner rather than later, it only takes about 3 hours and is well worth it with winter coming on.

Cheers,

Mike

When you do get the windscreen replaced, make sure the fitter knows what he's doing.
The bonnet has to be removed and therefore placed somewhere it won't get scratched/trod on. Also after our last windscreen replacement, we ended up with large gouges/chips on the top of the N/S wing where the fitter had 'walked' the windscreen into place.

I would endorse that comment of Rob's. Given that if you use one of these mobile fitters (they come to you) then in my experience there is just one of them and in my opinion you need 2 people to take off and replace the bonnet if you are to avoid any nicks in the paintwork above the wheel arches, especially if it is a bit windy. So be prepared to insist on lending a helping hand.

yeah two guys managed to scratch my offside front wing which ididnt notice until later, stand near them while they are doing it and offer them a drink they will think you are kind and will take more care. In addition i asked for genuine aud part windscreen whihc turned out to be OE standard but not marked audi. After this was fitted i cold see wave lines in the windscreen and got it replaced too on the grounds that it was flawed - strange but true. I now have a Pilkington windscreen!

I actually took a printout of the workshop manual chapter on windscreen replacement to Autoglass in Manchester, just in case.

They were very thorough, insisting that I do a walk-round check of the bodywork with them, to make note of any existing marks on the car.

They only ever use genuine Audi screens (apparently very rare, so check to see if they're in stock before you go in) and overall, they did a very good job, no extra marks and no glass shards left in the car.

Mike

I had my windscreen replaced at Autoglass. It was the first they had ever done and welcomed my advice on removing bonnet etc.. They covered the wings and did a first class job. I always take mine to the workshop rather than beside the road, I may be wrong but the fitters seem to be more experienced and (dare I say) more mature.
