sounds like a CV joint to me, try somewhere like Nationwide Autocentres they will be able to look quicker and I bet their labour rates aren't £95 / hour like my dealer charge, don't forget you will probably get charged 1/2 hr labour just for them at AUDI to 'look at it'

I know this may sound stupid but is there a stone in the tyre that would makie a ticking noise as you drove along at low speeds

On early cars I think Audi had a problem with a loose fit of the driveshaft spline in the hub. I've never heard of it happening on later models (after 2001) though.
The classic way to check for worn CV joints is to drive the car slowly on full lock in both directions and listen for the knocking noise. This really amplifies the noise and makes it easier to diagnose

hi all
Following a weekend of playing with car .......
No stone in treads
Knocking /ticking nosise is getting worse ,no noise on full lock ,only on light engine loads at low speeds , what gear the car is in make no diffence
Knocking noise only appers after about 12-20 miles when car is fully warmed up .It is related to wheel speed not engine speed .This then goes away when brakes have a little tap, only to reapper when brakes are relased. going around corners at both low and high speed fails to course this knocking noise. is this inner drive shaft joint ..... This is sounding like it going to hurt my bank statement
next Q can i fix it myself or does it need audi tools ect.....
wife did note that there is a loose nut behind steering wheel ...........
but that been the case with all car i've had
