Pumping noise

Hello one and all, I'm hoping someone here can help me. Recently I've been getting a strange pumping sound from the front of the car when I inititally accelerate from first gear sometimes in second too. Does anyone know what might be the cause of this?

If you have a tdi, it could be the EGR valve - see link for more details

yep i think you're right thanks for advice. does anyone know how much it might cost to repair\replace the valve?
