CHAPS AND CHAPESSES,
WHERE IS THE BEST PLACE TO GET VAG COM. I KNOW FOR EXAMPLE THAT SOME SOFTWARE IS FREEELY DOWNLOADABLE AND THAT YOU CAN GET CABLES ETC ON EBAY. dOES NAYONE HAVE COMMENTS ON THIS?

All versions of VAG-COM are free to download, so if anyone ever charges you for the software, they're ripping you off!

The interfaces are the expensive part - for a full, genuine interface cable, which is FULLy functioning, you're looking at £260-£270.

Try Gendan, based in South Wales for kits - they're very reliable.

I would also recommend Gendan. In addition to the genuine (and best) VagCom interfaces they also sell the cheaper variants so it could be worth discussing your requirements with them. If for example you only want to read and clear fault codes a lower spec cable should be ok. Watch out for connection issues as some cables won't fit the Audi socket - see link for more details

I paid approx £250 for my genuine VagCom cable from Gendan. They sell non genuine models with limited capability from about £30. I suggest you discuss your requirements and budget with them, then decide.
Don't forget that to make sense of fault codes and identify problem sensors etc, you really need the Audi shop manuals.
