I wrote a while ago about having some work done where the gearbox needed taking out.

When I got the car back, I noticed that the MPG on the DIS was wrong. Although I was stopped at lights or even with the engine off but the ignition on it would show a value, rather than the --- I used to get.

Skipton01 suggested that there was a cable incorrectly put back in by Audi while refitting the gearbox. I have been trying to get it back to them but it has been difficult with Christmas etc.

Anyway, the DIS has been informing me about miles to service now. It recently said 900 miles to service. After driving exactly 100 miles (Dublin to Belfast - motorway 85% of journey) it then said 600 miles to next service.

Is it possible that this error by Audi has messed up the service indicator as well, leading me to get it serviced prematurely?

I doubt it - I suspect this is the mileage to service - due.

VIS can catch you out if you're not careful. Mine was dropping 200 miles for every 300 I drove for ages until it dropped to 1300 miles (when it flags up each time you switch the ignition on that a service is due in X miles). Thereafter, it would drop 200 - 300 miles for each 100 I drove! It was a bit of a shock and necessitated me bringing the service forward.

In the space of 300 miles driven from 1300 miles, it dropped down to 500 miles due (i.e. a drop of 800 miles!). I don't know if others find this common because I was corresponding with an S3 owner on tyresmoke who had exactly the same thing happen to him.

Personally, I will get my car booked in for a service to coincide with the 1300 miles due point rather than faff about. The nice lady at Hitchin Audi did tell me that going over by up to 1000 miles is acceptable for 'FSH' purposes although when I asked her what it would do if I went over '0' miles 'till due, she wasn't too sure - I guess it would count upwards.
